Why Slip and Fall Accidents Are So Common at Stores like Macy’s

Slip and fall accidents can happen anywhere, but they are especially likely in retail settings. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) slips, trips and falls are common occurrences at retail stores. That’s because stores like Macy’s have a lot of customers coming in and out at all hours. Most are set in malls, so customers enter the store with other merchandise, food, and drink items that can easily fall or spill.

Macy’s stores also have a lot of their own merchandise, including clothing, small jewelry accessories, shoes, and hangers, that can fall into the aisles and present hazards if not picked up quickly. If the store is not diligent about maintaining other parts of the store, such as keeping the floors clean and free of damage or water, unsuspecting customers can trip, slip, or fall at any moment.

Store employees have a legal duty to prevent hazards from harming customers. If employees are not careful, slip and fall accidents can happen and present a liability. This is why you probably have the right to file an injury claim for the damages you face after your slip and fall at Macy’s.

What to Do Immediately After a Slip and Fall Accident at Macy’s in Georgia

After a slip and fall accident, it’s important to think about actions you’ll need to take to:

• Protect your legal rights
• Building a strong personal injury claim
• Preserve as much evidence as possible
• Avoid getting taken advantage of by the insurance company

The steps mentioned below will help you accomplish each of these points.

1. Take Pictures

Before leaving the scene of the accident, do what you can to document what happened. Slip and fall accident locations can be changed or cleaned up quickly, so you’ll want to preserve the scene as best you can.

Use your phone camera (or another camera, if you have it) to take pictures of:

• The entire accident scene where you slipped and fell
• Any visible injuries you have, including any torn clothing, scratches, bruises, or blood
• The hazard or dangerous condition that led to your fall
• Anything else that may help show what happened

You might also take a video of the scene and verbally explain what occurred.

2. Talk to Witnesses

In busy stores like Macy’s, chances are high that someone else saw your slip and fall accident. At the very least, they might have seen the dangerous or hazardous situation that caused your fall.

Talk to any potential witnesses and ask them what they saw. Ask for their full name and contact information. Witness testimony can be incredibly powerful in a personal injury case, so your Macy’s slip and fall accident lawyer will want to contact any witnesses later for a statement.

3. Report the Accident

Do not leave the store without letting management know about your slip and fall. Find a nearby employee and ask them to take you to a manager. Tell the manager that you slipped, fell, and were injured at the store.

If you get the sense that the manager or employees are dismissive of your report or trying to blame you, stand your ground. It’s good to be calm and polite, but do not admit any blame or apologize. Even if you are worried the accident may have been partially your fault, wait to talk to an attorney first.

Stores like Macy’s and their insurance companies are skilled at making slip and fall accident victims feel like they caused their accident, but people do not fall for no reason. Wait until you and your lawyer can further investigate for any and all store negligence.

4. See a Doctor

Once you leave the store, make sure you get medical treatment as soon as possible. There are a few reasons why this is so crucial:

• Prompt treatment prevents injuries from getting worse.
• Seeing a doctor right away shows that your injuries are serious and you truly needed the treatment, which is good for your insurance claim.
• It creates a record of your injuries and allows you and your doctor to create a treatment plan going forward.

Even if you feel like your injuries are not too bad, it’s best to get checked out, just in case.

5. Talk to a Macy’s Slip and Fall Accident and Injury Lawyer in Georgia

They can look at your case and help you take immediate action, gathering evidence and standing up to the insurance company if they try to take advantage of you.
