Georgia’s most dangerous cities for pedestrians include metropolitan areas like Atlanta, Macon, and Augusta. With higher populations and more cars on the road, these areas face issues at heavily trafficked intersections.
Pedestrian accidents can lead to painful injuries and quickly mounting medical bills. If you’ve been injured while walking, an Atlanta pedestrian accident lawyer can help you seek compensation.
The Most Dangerous Cities in Georgia for Pedestrians
While pedestrian accidents can happen in small towns, metropolitan areas offer more dangerous crosswalks.
With more cars and more foot traffic, the following cities are the most dangerous in the state.
Atlanta
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), Atlanta is the 24th most dangerous city in the country for pedestrians and cyclists.
In addition to tragic accidents that lead to fatalities, severe injuries are also common in pedestrian accidents.
Macon
Fatalities from pedestrian accidents in Macon-Bibb County rose in 2025. Both the Spring Street Bridge and Mercer University Drive are particularly dangerous areas for pedestrians.
Augusta
Within the past decade, there have been nearly 100 pedestrian accident-related fatalities in the Augusta area. Many of these accidents have taken place at night and in the early morning hours.
Poor lighting conditions on roads are often a factor in pedestrian accidents.
What Compensation Can Be Recovered After a Pedestrian Accident?
Depending on the injuries involved, pedestrian accident victims and their families can recover a range of financial and non–economic losses. Due to the force and speed of these accidents, victims can face life-changing consequences like internal organ damage, spinal cord and traumatic brain injuries, and severe lacerations or burns.
These injuries may lead to missed work, permanent disabilities, and long-lasting mental health effects. Fair compensation seeks to alleviate the financial pressures of your losses and address the impacts on your life.
You may be able to recover compensation for:
Economic Losses
These are financial losses due to the accident and can include:
- Medical expenses for things like surgeries, emergency room care, diagnostic tests, and physical therapy
- In-home care
- Future medical costs resulting from your injuries
- Mobility devices
- Home modifications
- Property damage
- Lost wages
- Reduced earning capacity
Non-Economic Losses
These compensate for losses that aren’t directly tied to a bill or receipt, such as:
- Emotional distress
- Pain and suffering
- Loss of enjoyment of life
Wrongful Death
If you lost a loved one due to someone else’s negligent actions, we are so sorry for your loss.
You may be able to pursue compensation for:
- Medical bills resulting from the accident and end-of-life care
- Your loved one’s financial and emotional support
- Funeral and burial expenses

What Are the Important Georgia Laws to Know in Pedestrian Accident Cases?
Georgia follows a modified comparative negligence rule. This means that as long as you are less than 50% at fault for your injuries, you can still recover compensation from the at-fault party (or parties).
Additionally, it’s important to move quickly with your case. Under Georgia’s statute of limitations, you typically only have two years to file a personal injury or wrongful death lawsuit. There are exceptions, though. Your attorney will keep track of all applicable deadlines for your case.
What Should You Do if You’ve Been Hurt in a Georgia Pedestrian Accident?
After an accident, it can feel chaotic. While prioritizing your safety should always be your priority, there are other steps you can take if safe to do so.
They are:
- Seek medical attention as soon as possible.
- Contact the police to report the accident.
- Take photos of the accident scene, including any visible injuries you have.
- Get contact information for any eyewitnesses.
- Contact a personal injury lawyer.
There are also some things to avoid to protect your legal right to compensation. They are:
- Avoid speaking directly to insurance adjusters and instead have them speak to your lawyer.
- Avoid posting about the accident on social media.
- Do not stop medical treatment early, as insurers may claim this means your injuries are less severe than claimed.
