All About Catastrophic Injuries
An injury that causes significant and life-changing consequences are catastrophic. The injury can be nonfatal but causes severe functional disability. Catastrophic injuries can be fatal as well.
Any injury that causes permanent disability or alters your life significantly, temporarily, or permanently can be catastrophic. The term describes the severity of an injury and how it impacts a person’s life.
Types of Catastrophic Injuries in Snellville
Since the term catastrophic injury is broad, various injuries garner this classification. Our catastrophic injury attorney in Snellville, GA, explains the different injuries.
Spinal Cord Injuries
The spine controls the signals from your brain to your body. When there is damage, the body is unable to communicate, and it can lead to paralysis. Spinal cord injuries can also limit your ability to hear, speak or see.
It is also challenging to swallow, control the bladder and bowel or regulate your body temperature.
Amputations
Losing a limb is a traumatizing experience and will hinder you from working and enjoying life. Emotional suffering is challenging regardless of whether it is a partial or complete amputation.
Eye Injuries
If an eye injury results in vision loss or extreme damage to the eye impairing your vision, that is a catastrophic injury.
Burn Injuries
There are varying degrees of burns from first- to third-degree. Burns result in permanent scarring and disfigurement. Some burns are so severe that they require amputation.
Neck Injury
There are many vital areas in your neck, and if you suffer an injury, it can cause you to suffer paralysis from the point of injury and below. Losing feeling from the neck down is life-changing and means you will likely be bed or wheelchair-bound.
Brain Injury
When your brain suffers an injury, it can lead to swelling, bruising and more. Victims of a traumatic brain injury will experience cognitive difficulties and emotional changes. Victims are unable to enjoy life, work, and live with restrictions.
Multiple Bone Fractures
You might not consider a broken bone to be a catastrophic injury, but when you have several bone fractures, recovery takes much longer. Multiple broken bones can also lead to life-threatening conditions like embolisms and deep vein thrombosis.
Catastrophic injuries make it difficult to get out of bed, and your focus must be on healing. For these cases, you will need to have catastrophic injury lawyers in Snellville meet with you at home or in the hospital.

Liability For Catastrophic Injuries
It is vital to find the liable party during an investigation into your injury so you can file a claim and subsequent lawsuit to recover damages. Any party who contributes to the injury is responsible for paying your expenses. Depending on your case, there can be one or several entities responsible.
The type of accident you endure will impact who we can hold liable for your injuries. Examples of negligent parties include:
- Businesses
- Motorists
- Pedestrians and bicyclists
- Transit companies
- Employers
- Property owners
- Manufacturers
- Government agencies
John Foy & Associates will use our resources to find the negligent parties and send them a demand letter detailing the expenses they owe you. We will continue to negotiate and go into litigation if the need arises to get you the compensation you deserve.
Catastrophic Injuries Leave a Lasting Impact
Unlike other injuries, a catastrophic injury leaves victims with long-term consequences like:
- Inability to take care of yourself
- Partial or complete paralysis
- Inability to work
- Moving into a nursing home
- Hiring an in-home nursing care service
- Reliance on medical equipment, medical devices, and medication
- Home and vehicle modifications
You must make many adjustments to your new life, which are emotionally and financially draining. You will not be able to care for your family and spend time with them in the same capacity you once did, which can lead to mental and mood disorders like depression and anxiety.
Recovering Damages
There are many short and long-term costs associated with catastrophic injuries, and you do not and should not pay these expenses independently. Medical treatment for these injuries is over six and seven figures. When someone else is negligent and changes your life for the worse, they are responsible for paying these losses.
Unfortunately, recovering damages is challenging because the negligent party will try to downplay your injuries, so they do not have to pay you what your case is worth. You can recover damages for:
- Surgery
- Hospitalization
- Medication
- Future medical bills
- Rehabilitation
- Medical devices
- Lost income, wages, and benefits
- Reduced earning capacity
- Emotional distress
- Scarring
- Disfigurement
- Pain and suffering
- Chronic pain
- Loss of enjoyment of life
- Loss of consortium
There is a two-year statute of limitations where you can take legal action. Once this deadline passes, you will be unable to recover compensation. You can recover economic and non-economic damages, but you do not have time to waste.
