3 Things You Should Know After a Rear-End Accident
After a rear-end collision, you might feel confused, overwhelmed, and emotional—especially if you’re dealing with injuries from the accident. It can be hard to take control of the situation, but it’s important to know the moments following a rear-end accident are significant.
Here are some things you should know about after getting in this type of collision with another vehicle.
1. What you say and do after a rear-end collision can impact your financial recovery
Unfortunately, insurance companies don’t often take your well-being into account. They are for-profit companies and will try to pay out the least amount of money to you, which is usually much less than you actually deserve. And they can take advantage of your vulnerability following a car wreck. There are a number of ways they can do this:
- By offering you money right away. A chunk of money right after an accident can be tempting to anyone, especially if you’re facing pricey medical treatments or repair damages to your car. The insurers will know you’re probably feeling desperate and that money can help. But it’s important to not take the first offer. If you take the money they offer right away, you may not be able to recovery what you truly need to get back on your feet. You always want to speak with an experienced rear-end collision accident lawyer before accepting any money.
- By trying to manipulate conversation. After a rear-end collision, the other driver’s insurance company will likely try to contact you. If you speak with them, they get information from you to use for reducing how much they pay. For example, they might ask you if you’re feeling better and if you say yes or sound okay on the phone, they may try to use that as evidence your injuries aren’t as bad as you say. This is another reason you don’t want to speak with the insurance company until you’ve called your attorney.
It’s also very important to NOT admit fault after the rear-end collision—even if you were in the vehicle that rear-ended. You can be kind and polite to the other driver, but don’t admit fault. There’s always more to the story and there may be damages you haven’t realized yet. Speak with your attorney instead.
2. You should always call the police
Even if the other driver doesn’t want to, calling the police is the best option right after a rear-end collision—even if the damage is minor (and it’s often legally required). This is because officers can come to the scene and create a police report, which can help your case. And if you or anyone else in the accident is suffering from severe injuries, get them medical attention immediately.
3. Get as much information as possible
You should get the name, driver’s license number, license plate number, phone number, address, and insurance information of everyone involved in the rear-end collision. Take a picture of the scene and any damage or injuries with your camera.
You’ll want to gather everything you can and any evidence that will help your case in a Dawson County court.
What Are the Most Common Injuries in a Rear-End Accident?
Dozens of different injuries can occur during a rear-end collision in Dawsonville. It really depends on the accident. However, there are a few injuries that are more common than others. The injuries we most often see happen from rear-end accidents are:
- Whiplash: When you’re hit from behind by another car, it throws you forward suddenly at a great force. If you were wearing a seatbelt, your torso will be restrained but your head and neck will “whip” forward. This can potential damage the muscles and tissue your neck, causing pain. This is a whiplash injury.
- Head injuries: When you’re rear-ended, your head can hit a number of things, including the car dashboard, the steering wheel, or the seat in front of you if you’re in the back of the vehicle. This collision with other objects in the car can cause concussions, swelling, cuts, or bleeding. Even minor concussions can potentially lead to long-term injuries, so it’s important to see a doctor right away.
- Broken bones: You could hit your head, arms, hands, or wrists on something in front of you when you’re rear-ended. This could potentially break bones in your body.
Even injuries that seem minor at first should be treated as potentially serious, since they can worsen over time or have underlying issues you don’t notice at first. This is why medical attention and calling your Dawsonville car accident lawyer before speaking with insurance is so important.
