Common Injuries from Head-On Collisions
Head-on collisions often cause catastrophic injuries and damage. Your injuries might leave you unable to work as you could before—or at all. Or, you might have lost a loved one in a head-on crash.
Even with modern safety features, head-on accidents are deadly. Seat belts, airbags, and other car parts can help reduce injuries, but they only go so far.
Both drivers and passengers can suffer injuries like:
- Traumatic brain injuries (TBI)
- Spinal cord injuries
- Paralysis
- Internal organ damage
- Neck injuries
- Broken bones
- And more
Don’t wait to get treatment for your accident injuries. See a doctor immediately, and contact an experienced lawyer. You will need to act quickly to hold the other driver responsible.
You don’t have to handle your case alone. A car accident lawyer will fight for the financial compensation you and your family deserve. Meanwhile, you can focus on healing.
Getting Compensation After a Head-On Accident
Georgia law is very clear on personal injury liability:
- Everyone must act in a way that doesn’t injure others.
- If someone drives carelessly, they have breached their legal duty.
- If you suffer injuries from the breached duty, you can recover damages under Georgia Code § 51-1-6.
The other driver’s insurance company should cover an accident they cause. The challenge with head-on accidents is that the damages are usually really serious. You will need to request a lot of compensation, and insurance policies have limits.
Filing Personal Injury Claims
Your lawyer will look at the ways you can receive compensation. First, they will help you file the insurance claim. The insurance company will usually send a low settlement offer, so your lawyer will negotiate for a higher offer.
If you can’t fully recover your costs through insurance, you might sue the other driver. Personal injury lawsuits are lengthy, but they can be worth it if you have a strong case.

Head-On Collision Damages
Your “damages” are any losses from the crash. Common accident damages include:
- Medical bills
- Lost wages
- Lost earning capacity
- Vehicle repairs or replacement
- Pain and suffering
- Mental anguish
Medical costs can be enormous after a head-on collision. Consider all current and future medical treatment you will need.
Also, talk to a lawyer about how the accident has affected your life. You may be able to recover damages for many emotional injuries, too.

Do not accept any money or sign anything from the insurance company. Also, don’t agree to give recorded statements. Talk to an experienced lawyer first. Without a lawyer, it’s too easy to leave money on the table and sign your rights away.
Facts About Head-On Collisions
There were 3,471 fatal head-on crashes in 2017, according to the Insurance Information Institute (III). That’s just over 10% of all fatal accidents from the same year. In 2018, front impacts made up 56% of passenger vehicle deaths.
Head-on accidents are not the most common crashes, but many of them are deadly. If another driver was at fault, you shouldn’t have to pay. You are probably entitled to compensation for your costs.
Why Head-On Accidents Happen
Head-on accidents can occur for many reasons. Some of the most common factors include:
- Drifting into another lane
- Swerving around a curve
- Over-correcting around a curve
- Alcohol or drug use
- Speeding
- Drowsy driving
- Passing on a two-way road
Many head-on collisions happen during “normal” actions. For example, one driver might take a curve too fast and drift into the oncoming lane. A head-on accident can occur before the other driver knows what’s happening.
Researching your accident will tell a lot about what happened. But getting the facts takes time and expertise. A lawyer will use their knowledge and resources to prove what occurred.
