What Are the Main Causes of Pedestrian Accidents?
Pedestrian accidents are often preventable. Most happen because a driver fails to see or chooses not to yield to a person crossing the road. So, what are the main causes of pedestrian accidents? We’ve seen the most serious cases result from:
- Distracted driving: Texting, calling, or using apps while behind the wheel
- Speeding: Especially in residential zones or near crosswalks
- Failure to yield: Drivers ignoring pedestrian right-of-way at intersections
- Running red lights or stop signs
- Driving under the influence: When alcohol or drugs impair drivers’ reaction times
- Poor visibility: Low lighting or bad weather conditions
Under South Carolina Code of Laws § 56-5-3130, drivers must yield to pedestrians in marked crosswalks and exercise due care to avoid hitting them. When a driver violates this responsibility, they may be held liable for your injuries. Our legal team can investigate your case and determine exactly how the accident happened and who should be held accountable.
What to Do if You’re Hit by a Vehicle as a Pedestrian
Being hit by a vehicle is traumatic and disorienting. If you are ever involved in a pedestrian accident, knowing what steps to take can protect your health and your rights. Here’s what to do if you’re hit by a vehicle as a pedestrian:
- Call 911 immediately: Ask for both police and medical responders.
- Get medical attention: Do this even if you feel okay, as some injuries show up later.
- Document the scene: Take photos of the car, intersection, injuries, and any skid marks.
