The Most Common Injuries in a Car Accident
Just about any physical injury can result from a car accident in Peachtree City. Below are some of the most common ones.
Neck and Back Injuries
These can include whiplash, sprains, strains, herniated discs, and other very painful injuries. Some neck or back injuries can take time to develop, so it’s important to pay attention to any signs of worsening pain.
Head Injuries or Brain Trauma
Head injuries can involve fractures, concussions, traumatic brain injuries, or internal bleeding, any of which can impact your entire life and require extensive treatment. If you suspect brain trauma or head injuries after a car accident, see a doctor immediately.
Burns
Burns can be quite common in car accidents, and they can range in severity. Burns may require skin grafts, reconstructive surgeries, or other forms of lifelong treatment.
Spinal Injuries
Much like a back injury, a spinal injury can change your life forever. You could become paralyzed or lose sensation in parts of your body.
Broken Bones
The impact of a car accident can quickly cause broken bones in any part of the body, including the arms, wrists, legs, and feet.
Soft Tissue Injuries
These can include muscles, ligaments, or tendons that have been torn or stretched too far. Whiplash, also mentioned above, is a soft tissue and neck-related injury that often results from car accidents.
Documenting Car Accident Injuries
After the accident, take pictures of any injuries that you’ve sustained right away, and don’t delay seeking medical treatment. When filing a claim with the at-fault driver’s insurance company, it helps to have a paper trail proving your injuries are real.
Keep track of all medical bills, diagnoses, paperwork, and anything else that involves your injuries from the car accident. Your Peachtree City car accident lawyer can advise you on exactly what paperwork you will need in your case.
You should also call Peachtree police to report the accident as soon as it happens. This will lead to a police report, which is the first documentation of the accident.
Seeing a Doctor for Your Accident Injuries (Even Minor Ones)
You should always see a doctor after your accident, even if your injuries were minor. It’s a good idea to go even if you don’t feel a lot of pain, as you could discover that your injuries were worse than you initially thought. For example, whiplash is a very common car accident injury that doesn’t always show symptoms right away (more on that below).
You want to fully account for all expenses in your car accident claim. Seeing a doctor will:
- Give you an idea of how much treatment you’ll need
- And create a record that you sought medical treatment soon after your accident
If there’s no record of you getting medical attention soon after, the insurance company may claim you weren’t hurt as badly as you said.
You should also take photos of your injuries right after your accident. Having time-stamped photos right, as well as signed paperwork from a medical professional, after an accident can help your case immensely.
Whiplash from a Peachtree City Car Accident
Whiplash is a very common and easily misunderstood car accident injury. It is a painful neck and upper back injury caused by a sudden back-and-forth movement of the neck.
This type of movement results from the impact of a car accident. It’s especially common in rear-end accidents, but whiplash can also be caused by any type of collision where sudden movement forces your neck to move in an unnatural way. The muscles and ligaments in your neck extend past their normal range of motion, causing pulls and tears.
Whiplash may produce other side effects, including:
- Dizziness
- Blurred vision
- Ringing in the ears
- Trouble sleeping
- Fatigue
- Pain and stiffness in the neck, shoulders, and upper back
- Headaches
- Loss of range of motion in the neck or upper back
- Tingling or numbness in the arms
When left untreated, whiplash can cause damage and pain for months or even years, which is why seeking treatment is the first thing you should do for whiplash. However, you may not even feel the effects of whiplash right away, so be sure to update your doctor on any changes or worsening of pain. Your doctor will also ask for the details like how the car accident happened, when your whiplash symptoms appeared, what other symptoms you have, and a rating of your pain levels.
Unfortunately, whiplash is often doubted as a real injury. Insurance companies may claim that you had a pre-existing condition causing the pain or that you’re lying about being injured. This is why you must seek medical attention along with professional legal advice. Don’t deal with insurance companies alone after any injury. Let a Peachtree City car accident lawyer help you with your claim from the start.
