Motorcycle Accident Statistics
Because motorcycle riders are an exclusive group, many people underestimate how often they are injured in motorcycle accidents. The Texas Department of Transportation (TDOT) reports that 412 motorcyclists died from motorcycle accidents in 2019.
In the same year, more than 1,800 motorcycle riders experienced severe injuries. TDOT reports that one motorcycle rider is killed daily on the Texas roadways.
Causes of Motorcycle Accidents
Some of the common causes of motorcycle accidents include lane splitting, sudden stops, opening car doors without looking, left turn accidents, hit-and-run crashes, and more.
Lane Splitting
Lane splitting is the action where motorcycle riders drive in between two lanes of traffic. Because of a motorcycle rider’s small stature, they will split between two lanes in a way to move through traffic. Unfortunately, one of the biggest threats to motorcycle riders who lane split is drivers who are not paying attention and attempt to change lanes.
Sudden Stops
Similar to lane splitting, motorcycle riders are more likely to get hurt when the cars in front stop abruptly. These actions can cause motorcycle riders to get hit in a rear-end accident. These types of accidents can cause motorcycle riders to suffer serious injuries.
Drivers Opening Car Doors without Looking
Drivers who do not check their mirrors before exiting their cars can hit motorcycle riders when parked in lanes next to ongoing traffic. Motorcycle riders cannot react quickly to and avoid these types of accidents.
Left-Turn Accidents
When car drivers attempt to make a left turn while a motorcycle rider is in the next lane, the driver must yield the right of way to the motorcycle rider. Instead, drivers will misjudge their distance and try to pass the motorcycle rider, hitting them.
Hit-and-Run Accidents
When drivers drink and get behind the wheel, their ability to think and make sound decisions is extremely compromised. The consumption of alcohol can make it even more difficult for a driver to notice the presence of a motorcycle rider, who is already hard to identify on the road. To add insult to injury, once a driver has hit a motorcycle rider, they will flee the scene of the accident to avoid being arrested and detained.
Defective Motorcycle Equipment
Even if you check the motorcycle prior to each time you go for a ride, a part or piece of equipment might fail while in operation. When a defective or broken motorcycle part leads to an accident, you are often able to hold the part manufacturer liable for your injuries.
Road Debris
The road is a dangerous place for a motorcyclist and not just because of inattentive or impaired drivers. Potholes, debris, rocks, missing signs, improper lighting, and improperly working traffic lights can all lead to motorcycle accidents.
Common Motorcycle Accident Injuries
The most ironic part about motorcycle accidents is that the motorist who endures most injuries is often seen as the negligent driver. The motorcycle rider will take on most of the impact between a motorcycle and a car. That is why the injuries associated with a motorcycle accident are fatal.
Common motorcycle accident injuries include:
- Paralysis
- Blunt force trauma to the head
- Unconsciousness
- Traumatic amputations
- Fractured bones
- Road rash
- Death
If the motorcycle rider is not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, the rider is more likely to develop a traumatic brain injury.

Holding Reckless Drivers Liable For Your Injuries
As a motorcycle rider who has been seriously injured in a motorcycle accident, you have a legal right to hold the other driver liable for your injuries. If the other driver was at fault for your accident, you can sue him or her for the damages caused by your accident.
After your motorcycle accident, you will have to take time off work while recovering. You will still be responsible for paying any medical bills related to your accident. In addition to the stress of your financial situation, you can still feel pain after recovering from your injuries.
All of these damages can be compensated for in your lawsuit.
Other Parties Who Might Be Liable in Your Hinesville Motorcycle Crash
In addition to the at-fault drivers, there are other parties that you can hold liable for your motorcycle accident. If your motorcycle accident happened because of a dangerous road condition, you could sue the government agency responsible for road maintenance. Although the process for suing the government agency would be complex, it is certainly an option.
Another liable party is the motorcycle manufacturer. Sometimes, your motorcycle accident can happen because one or several of your motorcycle’s parts were defective. When this happens, you can sue the manufacturer for putting you in serious harm.
