What Is the Georgia BioLab Lawsuit About?

On September 29, 2024, a fire erupted at the BioLab facility in Conyers, Georgia, and released a toxic plume of smoke containing chlorine levels as much as 22 times higher than the Environmental Protection Agency’s actionable level.

Approximately 17,000 residents were forced to evacuate their homes, while another 90,000 people were ordered to shelter in place with their homes sealed up and their air conditioners turned off.

The toxic plume harmed many people in the area, and our lawyers want to help as many victims as possible get compensation from BioLab and its parent company, Lawrenceville, Georgia-based KIK Consumer Products, for the harm their actions caused.

What Happened at the Conyers BioLab Facility?

Around 5 a.m. on Sunday, September 29, a sprinkler malfunction at the BioLab facility in Conyers caused water to come in contact with a water-reactive chemical called trichloroisocyanuric acid (TCCA).

This generated enough heat to start a fire and released toxic chlorine gas into the air.

This BioLab facility has a history of fires, with similar incidents occurring in 2004, 2016, and 2020. This points to a history of negligence that should be punished.

Potential Impacts of the BioLab Chemical Fire

People within a two-mile radius of the BioLab facility were ordered to shelter in place for at least a week, and it’s still too early to know what long-term impacts nearby residents may experience.

Some potential impacts of this fire include injuries or illnesses, business closures, and property damage.

Injuries

According to the Medical Management Guidelines for Chlorine released by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, “Exposure to chlorine may cause burning of the eyes, nose, and throat; cough as well as constriction and edema of the airway and lungs can occur.”

If you’re experiencing any effects from exposure to the toxic plume, contact the experienced attorneys at John Foy & Associates to find out how we may be able to help you get compensation for your medical bills, lost wages, and more.

Business Closures

Many businesses near the BioLab facility were ordered to close for some time after the initial fire, and some businesses that were allowed to open experienced a lack of customers due to nearby residents trying to stay inside and avoid the toxic plume.

Property Damage

If you have debris in your yard or property damage related to the fire and toxic plume, you can check out BioLab’s new Supporting the Conyers Community page.

For those who became ill or injured after being exposed to the toxic plume and who also experienced property damage, the compassionate BioLab fire lawsuit attorneys at John Foy & Associates may be able to help you get money for your medical bills, lost wages, property damage, and more.

What to Do if You’re Experiencing Symptoms

If you’re experiencing any symptoms after being exposed to the toxic plume caused by the BioLab fire, you should get medical attention, document your symptoms, and schedule a free consultation with a personal injury lawyer.

Get Medical Attention

Don’t let a worry about medical bills prevent you from seeking medical attention. BioLabs should be held responsible for all your medical care and going to the doctor as soon as you can:

• Helps you get treatment and properly heal
• Provides important documentation of your symptoms to prove you suffered in the way you say you did
• Helps connect your illness or injury to the BioLab fire so we can hold them liable and get you compensation

Document All Your Symptoms

In between medical appointments, you should keep detailed records of your symptoms and how they progress over time. These records will help us prove your pain and suffering to get you more compensation.
