What Causes Fuel Truck Accidents
There are a few main reasons fuel truck accidents can happen, such as:
- Driver fatigue
- Mechanical errors
- Shifting liquid cargo
- Distracted driving
- Drunk driving
When liquid cargo moves in the tank, it’s known as sloshing. Sloshing liquids can cause the driver to lose control of the truck, leading to a rollover or other serious accident. This problem is most common when the truck tank isn’t completely filled.
Driver fatigue is also very common with fuel tank accidents. Commercial truckers typically have long work schedules and strict deadlines. Even with regulations from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), truckers might work too-long hours, leading to serious fatigue. Drivers might also abuse drugs or alcohol while working to stay awake.
From fatigue or drunk driving to poorly-loaded fuel, there are many dangerous causes of these accidents. No matter the cause, you have rights if you were injured. The driver or trucking company is likely liable for the crash.
Fires and Explosions from Fuel Truck Accidents
When a fuel truck crashes, there are added risks. Fuel can catch on fire or explode during a collision, causing additional injuries and damages. In many cases, victims lose their lives or suffer permanent injuries.
Common Injuries in Fuel Truck Accidents
Large truck accidents often lead to significant injuries, such as:
- Head and brain injuries
- Broken bones
- Fire or chemical burns
- Lacerations
- Loss of limb
- Spinal cord injuries
Tragically, many truck accident injuries are life-threatening. Victims can lose their lives or suffer permanent injuries that impact their quality of life. Medical bills can cost thousands of dollars or more.

How to Seek Compensation for Your Costs
If you didn’t cause your accident, you can seek financial compensation. Georgia law holds the at-fault party responsible for an accident they caused. However, the burden is on you to take legal action.
You can file a claim with the at-fault party’s insurance company. If the trucking company is liable, they will probably have a strong insurance policy. In many cases, you can fight for a settlement from the insurance company to recover your damages.
Sometimes, the insurance company will refuse to settle. If you cannot get a fair offer, you might need to file a lawsuit. However, talk to a lawyer before making any decisions. An experienced lawyer will know how to negotiate for the compensation you deserve.
Calculating Your Truck Accident Damages
An accident can affect your life in many ways. In Georgia, you can pursue money for any losses that result from your accident injuries, such as:
- Doctor and hospital bills
- Surgeries
- Physical therapy and rehabilitation
- Prescription medications
- Lost wages
- Loss of earning capacity
- Pain and suffering
- Loss of enjoyment of life
Our lawyers have handled truck accident claims throughout Georgia. We are not afraid of complicated accident claims like these. We’ll look at every way the accident has impacted your life when building your claim.
Your injury claim will need to include proof of your damages. You can gather this proof through medical bills, former pay stubs, receipts, and more. As for emotional damages like pain and suffering, those are harder to calculate.
A Roswell fuel truck accident lawyer can determine the worth of your total losses, including emotional damages. You’ll know how a fair settlement looks in case the insurance company sends a lowball.
