Many motorcycle riders enjoy the freedom and thrill that riding a bike provides. They can maneuver more easily in traffic, but the small size and decreased visibility of motorcycles make them prone to dangerous accidents. When a bike collides with a car or other vehicle, the rider nearly always suffers serious injuries.
If you or a loved one have been hurt while riding a bike, contact John Foy & Associates to speak with a Rex motorcycle accident lawyer now. Our team is known as the Strong Arm in Georgia, and we work hard to secure compensation from those to blame for your injuries.
Common Causes of Motorcycle Accidents in Rex
The area around Rex is mostly rural, but it is a stone’s throw from the busy multi-lane highways of Atlanta. When you ride with so many other vehicles, it is easy to become a victim of the irresponsible action of others. Some common ways other drivers can cause motorcycle accidents include:
- Failure to signal turns or lane changes
- Distracted driving
- Fatigued driving
- Driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- Speeding
- Driving recklessly or without regard for road conditions
- Sudden braking in front of a motorcycle rider
- Ignoring traffic signs and lights
- Following a motorcycle too closely
The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) reports motorcycles account for 21% of total driver fatalities, even though they are only 2 percent of all Georgia vehicle registrations. Motorcycles provide almost no protection for their riders, who can be thrown from the bike, crash into a car, or get caught under the bike in a skid.
Understanding exactly what caused your accident requires help from a reputable motorcycle accident lawyer in Rex. The team at John Foy & Associates can investigate who is responsible and hold them accountable through insurance claims or in court.
Motorcycle Riders Suffer Extreme Injuries
The number one injury and cause of death in a motorcycle crash is a head injury. However, riders can suffer many forms of severe bodily damage when other drivers do not pay attention to these smaller vehicles. Even a long-time experienced rider can face tremendous injuries that may leave them unable to work or return to their normal life.
Head and Facial Injuries
Even though Georgia requires all riders to wear a helmet, the impact of being thrown from a bike or colliding against any object can result in closed-head brain injury, a cracked skull, or a broken jaw. If the helmet doesn’t function properly or comes off, the rider could suffer the loss of their teeth, eyes, or ears. There is even a risk of decapitation.
Broken Bones
Being thrown from a bike onto a car or tractor-trailer is extremely dangerous, even at low speeds. The force of the impact can break many bones, including the spine or neck. Arms, legs, hands, and feet are usually fractured, and broken ribs can puncture internal organs.
Spine and Spinal Cord Injuries
Head trauma is common in motorcycle accidents, but victims also suffer additional damage to their necks, spines, and spinal cords. These injuries often require extensive surgery and rehabilitation. They can cause permanent disability, robbing the victim of their ability to ride, work, or return to their previous activities.
Amputation
Being thrown against a vehicle or sliding along a roadway after a motorcycle accident can result in the amputation of hands or feet. Heavy protective gear is recommended for all riders, but severe crashes can damage arms and legs enough that surgical amputation is needed to save the victim’s life.
Chemical and Fire Burns
Along with gasoline in the tank, motorcycles and cars use other chemicals to run. When these are released during an accident, they can cause severe burns if they contact a rider’s skin. If a vehicle catches fire, victims can suffer additional second- or third-degree burns if they are not wearing flame-retardant clothing.
Estimating Compensation for a Rex Motorcycle Accident Claim
When a rider suffers so many debilitating injuries from their accident, they face extensive treatment and the prospect of lifelong care. Medical bills in these cases can skyrocket in the days following the crash if a rider’s condition worsens. Your family will be focused on helping you heal and likely cannot take on the burden of filing insurance or personal injury claims.
During this stressful time, turn to a skilled Rex motorcycle accident attorney from John Foy & Associates. We offer free case evaluations to understand your unique circumstances and help you create an estimate of the costs for a full recovery.
Compensatory Damages
Compensatory damages fall into two categories: economic and non-economic. Economic losses are quantifiable with a bill or treatment estimate. Non-economic losses cover the pain and suffering you experience as you recover.
Some examples include:
- Doctor bills
- Hospital costs, such as ICU, ER, and surgeries
- Physical and psychological rehabilitation costs
- Repair or replacement for property such as motorcycles, cellphones, clothing, etc.
- Mental anguish
- Loss of income
- Permanent disability
- Scarring or disfigurement
- Amputation
The extent of a motorcycle rider’s injuries usually translates to months or years of recovery. This means settlements for insurance or jury trial awards tend to be higher than for other types of accidents. Putting together an appropriate compensation calculation is critical to ensuring that you and your family do not suffer a financial burden due to someone else’s negligence.
