What to Know About U-Haul Truck Accidents

U-Haul is a moving and storage rental company with tens of thousands of dealers across the country. U-Haul trucks deliver packages to residents throughout Johns Creek. These trucks are much larger than the average passenger vehicle, and drivers must be careful.

If something goes wrong and an accident happens, the damages can be terrible. Victims can suffer severe injuries, totaled vehicles, or even death. Plus, truck drivers often have strict deadlines to make deliveries, which increases the risk of careless behavior.

If you were injured in a U-Haul truck accident, there’s a chance someone was negligent. The driver or the company might be responsible for your injury treatment costs, lost wages, and pain and suffering. You might file a claim to recover what you’ve lost because of the accident.

Common Causes of U-Haul Truck Accidents

Accidents can happen for many different reasons. When an accident involves a commercial truck, the causes can be even more complicated. Let’s look at some of the most common reasons we see for U-Haul truck accidents.

Driver Fatigue

Truck drivers often have long work schedules and grueling schedules. U-Haul drivers rarely travel long distances like semi-truck drivers, but they still cover a lot of road each day. The driver must also deliver packages as quickly as possible.

Strict schedules can easily lead to driver fatigue. If a driver is too stressed or under-rested, they can make mistakes that lead to serious accidents. Driver fatigue can cause:

• Slower reaction times
• Blurry vision
• Exhaustion
• Aggressive driving
• Falling asleep at the wheel

Drivers who operate a vehicle for work are more likely to make careless mistakes, even with a higher duty of care. The pressure and stress of the job can lead to a serious or life-threatening accident.

Truck Driver Mistakes

Compared to regular drivers, commercial drivers have a higher duty of care, according to the Official Code of Georgia Annotated (OCGA) §46-9-1. Even so, U-Haul truck drivers can make careless mistakes.

Examples of truck driver negligence include:

• Driving while distracted
• Speeding
• Driving under the influence (DUI)
• Failure to yield
• Unsafe lane changes

U-Haul Renter Mistakes

Not all U-Haul drivers are professionals. People rent out U-Haul trucks and vans for their moving needs. Unfortunately, this puts inexperienced drivers operating large vehicles on the road.

If a U-Haul renter causes an accident, liability can become complicated. The renter typically signs a waiver that protects the company from fault in an accident. However, the company’s insurance company might also cover some of the damages.

If a renter was at fault, contact a lawyer. A lawyer will need to investigate the details before you can know your options. You’ll need to know who you can pursue for compensation for your damages.

U-Haul Company Negligence

The company also has a duty to properly hire and train their drivers. If the company hires someone when they shouldn’t have, U-Haul could be partially at fault for an accident.

Defective or Poorly-Maintained Parts

Some accidents happen because a U-Haul truck can have defective parts. Other times, the truck might need maintenance that it didn’t receive. In either case, the company or a manufacturer could be at fault for the damages.

A Johns Creek U-Haul truck accident lawyer will determine what caused the accident. From there, you’ll know where to seek compensation for your damages.

Injuries from U-Haul Truck Accidents

An accident with a large vehicle is more likely to have serious injuries and damages. When a U-Haul truck is involved, victims can suffer life-threatening or catastrophic injuries. These injuries might need long-term and expensive treatment.

Common truck accident injuries include:

• Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs)
• Broken bones
• Neck and back injuries
• Spinal cord injuries
• Internal organ damage
• Amputations
• Severe burns

If a truck contains flammable or hazardous materials, the accident might cause fires or explosions. Items falling from the truck can also cause more serious injuries if they fall onto vehicles on the road.

Don’t discount any of your accident injuries. Also, see a doctor as soon as possible. You’ll need to document your injuries and get an idea of your treatment needs. If you wait too long to get medical attention, it will hurt your case.

How to Document Your Accident Damages

Filing an insurance claim is usually the first step after an accident you didn’t cause. First, your claim will need to prove the other party’s liability. Then, you’ll need to gather evidence of your damages.

You can document your accident damages by:

• Saving all of your medical bills
• Getting copies of your medical records
• Compiling past pay stubs and tax returns
• Writing down how the accident has affected you
• Taking pictures of your injuries, vehicle damage, and the entire accident scene

Also, contact a lawyer who can help you. Your lawyer will know how to gather evidence of everything you’ve lost from the accident and more.
