What Causes a Catastrophic Injury?
The main cause of a catastrophic injury is an unexpected accident. This unexpected accident can be anything from a car accident to a birth injury.
Whatever the accident, it must be so severe that it causes you to endure long-term consequences. These consequences can range from permanent disabilities to long-term trauma to various body parts.
Common Catastrophic Injury Accidents
Some of the accidents that can lead to catastrophic injuries include:
- Medical malpractice accidents
- Car accidents
- Birth injuries
- Boating accidents
- Slip and fall accidents
- Horseback riding accidents
- Physical assault
- Explosions and fires
The Dangers of Catastrophic Injuries
What makes catastrophic injuries so dangerous is that there is no possible recovery from them. With a majority of injuries, you know that your body will heal. With a catastrophic injury, however, your body experiences serious damage to critical areas.
Your head, spine, nerves, and other body parts can experience lifelong damage. As a result of these permanent disabilities, you enter a lifelong dependency stage with the people around you.
Lifetime Dependency on Medical Staff
In addition to your family and friends, you will have to become accustomed to relying on various medical needs. You may require emergency care services and medical transportation to the facility from the beginning of your injury. After seeking immediate medical attention, you may need additional resources like pain medication and medical devices.
Once your healing progresses, you will take speech therapy courses and in-home medical attendants who can care for you when your family members are at work.
Reduced Ability to Work
One another consequence of your catastrophic injury is that you will have to question whether you can still perform at work or not. Your catastrophic injury can be so severe that you can still not return to work, even after recovery. Losing your main source of income can be terrifying for many catastrophic injury victims.
Your medical services will already require thousands, if not millions, of dollars. Having little to no money can place a serious financial burden on you and your family.
Ongoing Physical and Mental Pain
Another long-term consequence of your catastrophic injury is the ongoing physical and mental pain you will experience for the rest of your life. Your injuries may be so severe that additional services like reconstructive surgery will be needed. Experiencing constant surgeries can cause you serious physical trauma.
Another type of trauma that is equally painful is the mental trauma associated with your injury. The accident that caused your injury can be so traumatic that you form a sense of PTSD following your accident.
Dealing with your independence loss can also cause significant mental anguish. You can suffer from depression and other serious mental disorders.

Suing For Compensation After a Brain Injury in Hinesville
For every type of consequence associated with your injury, there is damage that you can sue for in a catastrophic injury lawsuit. For example, the expensive medical expenses you must pay can be financially compensated. The same applies to the lost wages from your occupation and even the future wages you would have made if not for your injury.
Another damage that can cover your injury’s physical and mental pain is pain and suffering. Pain and suffering help calculate the pain your accident caused you.
Types of Claims
For your catastrophic injury accident, there are several types of accidents that you can sue for. These include car accidents, drunk driving accidents, slip and fall accidents, workers’ compensation, motorcycle accidents, and others. The parties who have caused these accidents are who you would sue for your injuries.
However, their insurance companies will be responsible for providing your compensation.
Proving Your Case Against Insurance Companies
You can discuss a mutual settlement option with the other party’s insurance company during your lawsuit. During this phase of your lawsuit, you will experience the most difficulty. The insurance company wants a different result from the settlement than you do.
Their mission is not to reward you with a settlement at all. If they throw out a settlement offer for you, that is still not a good sign. The settlement amount the insurance company throws out is not a portion of what you can win in your lawsuit.
