What to do if I’m involved in a broadside collision? After being involved in a broadside collision, you should get yourself to safety and take steps to call emergency responders before getting in touch with an experienced Atlanta side-impact collisions lawyer and reporting the accident to your insurance company. We understand that being involved in a broadside collision can be a frightening and disorienting experience.
These types of accidents often result in serious injuries and significant vehicle damage, which you may be expected to pay for if you do not hold the liable party accountable for their negligence. This is why it is so crucial to act quickly and protect your rights. Knowing what steps to take after a broadside collision can help you secure the compensation you need to recover and move forward.
Check for Injuries and Ensure Safety
After being involved in a broadside collision, your first priority should be checking for injuries and ensuring everyone’s safety. These types of accidents can result in catastrophic injury or death, which is why it is so important to assess the condition of all involved parties as soon as possible. Taking immediate action to secure the scene can help prevent further risks and keep everyone safe.
Start by checking yourself and others for visible injuries, such as bleeding, fractures, or difficulty moving. If anyone is unconscious or seriously injured, avoid moving them unless there is an immediate danger, such as a fire or traffic hazard. Once injuries are assessed, determine whether it is safe to move vehicles out of the roadway to prevent additional accidents.
You can further reduce your risk of a secondary collision by turning on hazard lights to alert other drivers and moving your vehicle out of traffic if it is safe to do so. You should also stay away from the crash site to reduce the risk of secondary collisions. By taking these steps, you can create a safer environment for everyone involved and allow emergency responders to assess the situation without additional dangers.
Contact Emergency Services
Calling 911 after being involved in a broadside collision is critical to protecting your health and creating an official record of the accident. Emergency responders can provide immediate medical attention to anyone injured and assess the severity of the crash. Reporting the collision also ensures that law enforcement can document the scene and gather the details needed to determine liability.
When speaking to the dispatcher, provide clear and concise information about the accident. Include the location of the crash, the number of vehicles involved, and any visible injuries. If possible, describe road conditions and other relevant details to help first responders arrive prepared to handle the situation.
The police play an important role in documenting the accident and creating a report that can support your claim. Officers will assess the scene, speak to witnesses, and collect information from the drivers involved. This official report will be a critical piece of supporting evidence when dealing with insurance companies or pursuing compensation for your injuries and damages.
Collect Evidence at the Scene
Gathering evidence at the scene of a broadside collision is essential for supporting your insurance claim and proving liability. The evidence you collect can provide a clear picture of what happened, helping establish fault and demonstrating the extent of your damages. Some of the most valuable types of evidence to collect at the scene include:
- Photos of the accident scene, including vehicle damage and road conditions.
- Close-up images of skid marks, debris, or any contributing hazards.
- Photos of visible injuries to document the impact of the crash.
- Video footage from nearby security or dash cameras, if available.
- A note of any nearby homes or businesses that may have visible security cameras that may have captured the collision on video.
- Contact information for witnesses who saw the collision occur.
- The other driver’s name, license plate number, and insurance details.
- A detailed personal account of how the collision occurred.
- A copy or photo of the other driver’s license and insurance card.
Witness statements can provide valuable insights and support your version of events. Exchanging information with the other driver ensures that you have the details needed to file an insurance claim. When you thoroughly document the accident, you can prevent the defense from being able to blame you for the accident and take advantage of Georgia’s modified comparative negligence laws under OCGA § 51-12-33.

Notify Your Insurance Provider
Notifying your insurance provider promptly after a broadside collision is one of the most important steps to take to protect your rights and secure the compensation you deserve. Reporting the accident ensures that your claim is documented and initiates the process of recovering damages. Acting quickly can also help prevent delays or disputes that could affect your ability to receive a settlement.
When your Atlanta car accident lawyer contacts your insurer, we will provide factual details about the accident, such as the date, time, location, and parties involved. We will also share relevant information about the vehicles, any visible injuries, and the police report, if available. You should avoid admitting fault or speculating about the cause of the accident when speaking with the insurance company, as these statements could be used to reduce or deny your claim.
Reporting that you were involved in a broadside collision sooner can help preserve your right to compensation. You can do this by demonstrating that you are taking the claim seriously and complying with policy requirements. It also allows the claims process to move forward more efficiently and gives your insurer the opportunity to investigate the accident and determine liability.
