The John Foy & Associates Strong Arm Pitcher of the Month for May 2025 is Chris Sale. The Atlanta Braves ace started five games and posted a 2-0 record with wins against Boston and Philadelphia. Sale tallied 40 strikeouts and an impressive 1.1 ERA for the month.
The 36-year-old left-hander also threw 6.2 scoreless innings in an extra-innings victory over Cincinnati on May 6, but didn’t get the win despite striking out 10 batters. During his five outings in May, Sale pitched 32.1 innings and only gave up four earned runs.

Sale and the Braves in 2025
Atlanta is off to a tough start in 2025, currently 10 games behind the division-leading New York Mets in the National League East as the schedule moves into June. They’ll have plenty of opportunities to gain ground throughout the young season.
Chris Sale has started 12 games and earned a 3-3 record, and contributed to an additional three wins without a decision in his favor. So far, he has given up 65 hits and 23 earned runs in 67.2 innings pitched, and posted a 3.06 ERA.
Sale is coming off an All-Star performance in 2024, where he won his first Cy Young award. He led the National League in strikeouts (225) and set career bests for wins (18), winning percentage (.857), and ERA (2.38). After a rocky April in 2025, Sale appears to be back to his all-star self in May.
Chris Sale Before the Braves
Sale came to the Braves in December 2023 after six seasons with the Boston Red Sox, as part of a trade that included shortstop Vaughn Grissom. In Boston, Sale had started strong, making two All-Star teams. He then suffered a plague of injuries and missed the entire 2020 season.
Before his stint with the Red Sox, Sale had spent seven seasons with the Chicago White Sox. In Chicago, Sale made five All-Star teams and established himself as one of the best pitchers in Major League Baseball.
The Colorado Rockies drafted him out of high school in 2007, but he chose to play college ball at Florida Gulf Coast University, where he posted 146 strikeouts during his senior season. The White Sox drafted him in 2010, and he made his Major League debut on August 6 of that year.
Chris Sale’s Major League Accolades
