1. Assess Immediate Safety
Upon emerging from the wreckage, your first priority should be to assess your surroundings for immediate dangers. Check for fire, smoke, or unstable structures. If possible, move away from the crash site to a safe location, as residual fuel or unstable parts may pose risks.
If you are physically capable, check for injured individuals nearby. Administer first aid if you are trained to do so, and encourage others to assist as needed. Providing help to the injured can save lives and prevent further harm.
2. Contact Emergency Service
As soon as you are in a safe location, contact emergency services. Provide them with the necessary details, including the location of the crash, the number of people involved, and any visible injuries or hazards.
Once you’ve reported the crash, follow any instructions from emergency personnel. They may provide guidance on how to manage the situation until help arrives.
3. Evacuate the Area
If the crash occurred in a remote area or a busy urban environment, evacuate to a safe distance. This helps prevent potential injuries from explosions, fire, or incoming rescue vehicles.
Position yourself where rescue teams can easily spot you. If you’re in a remote location, try to create a signal, such as waving clothing or using a whistle, to attract attention.

Distance is no obstacle. We work with clients across the country and make sure every one of them feels taken care of, no matter how far the call travels.
4. Gather Information
If it is safe to do so, take notes about the crash, including the time, location, and any noticeable factors (like weather conditions or mechanical issues). Photographic evidence can also be valuable for investigations.
If other survivors are present, exchange contact information. This can facilitate future communication regarding recovery and any potential legal matters.
5. Seek Medical Attention
Even if you feel fine, it’s crucial to seek medical evaluation. Some injuries, like internal trauma or concussions, may not be immediately apparent. Emergency responders will conduct assessments, but a follow-up with your healthcare provider is recommended.
Keep detailed records of any injuries sustained. This information will be important for medical claims and legal considerations later.
6. Report the Incident
Once safe and attended to, report the incident to the appropriate aviation authority, which may vary by region. In the U.S., the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigates aviation accidents, while in other countries, similar organizations perform this role.
Stay in contact with these authorities for any updates regarding the investigation. Your statements may be necessary for determining the cause of the crash.
7. Notify Relevant Parties
Contact the airline or helicopter operator to report your involvement in the crash. They will likely have protocols in place for dealing with incidents, including support for passengers.
Communicate with family and friends to inform them of your safety and whereabouts. This can alleviate their concern and help them understand the situation.
8. Consider Emotional Support
Experiencing a crash can lead to significant psychological stress. Consider reaching out for professional counseling to process the event. Therapy can be invaluable in coping with trauma and anxiety.
Look for support groups specific to aviation incidents. Connecting with others who have experienced similar events can provide comfort and understanding.
9. Legal Considerations
Depending on the circumstances of the crash, you may wish to consult with Atlanta personal injury lawyers who understand aviation law. We can guide you on rights and possible claims for damages, especially if negligence is involved.
Additionally, familiarize yourself with your rights as a passenger. Airlines often have obligations regarding passenger safety and may provide compensation for injuries or losses.
10. Long-Term Recovery
Continue to monitor both your physical and mental well-being. Be proactive about seeking ongoing medical care if needed, and don’t hesitate to reach out for emotional support.
Keep all records related to the crash, including medical bills, correspondence with authorities, and notes from your consultations. This information will be crucial for any claims you may pursue.
