What Are Some Common Injuries Caused by Car Accidents?

The injuries arising from a car accident vary a lot based on the circumstances of the crash and the individuals involved. Your body and mind might not react the same way as someone 20 years younger or older than you, for example. You could also have additional medical conditions that make your injuries worse than others.

The person who is at fault for the accident is responsible for whatever damages they cause, no matter how serious or relatively minor they are. Some of the most common injuries that occur because of car accidents are included below.

Head Injuries

Your body is often traveling very quickly during a car accident. When your car stops suddenly, your body doesn’t stop in the same way. That means your body will keep moving even when the vehicle stops suddenly—and that can often lead to head injuries. Your head may hit the steering wheel, dashboard, or seat in front of you, for example.

You can be susceptible to head injuries even when your head doesn’t hit anything at all. The motion of your brain hitting the side of your skull can lead to a traumatic brain injury, bleeding, or bruising, which can result in extremely severe and even life-threatening damage.

Scrapes, Cuts, and Bruising

Cuts, scrapes, and bruising are also common when your body comes into contact with anything inside the vehicle. While most of the time your body hits things attached to the vehicle, anything that is in your car can cause significant damage if it’s traveling at high speeds.

In many situations, injuries like these are minor—but cuts and internal bleeding can sometimes be very severe. You may not even realize just how injured you are until long after the incident. It takes time for your body and mind to “sync up” once the excitement and terror of the crash subsides. That’s why it’s a good idea to get medical help after any Woodstock car accident, no matter how minor you think the accident is.

Whiplash

Whiplash injuries, unfortunately, have some negative stigma attached to them due to the nature of the injuries and how common they are, particularly in rear-end collisions. The term “whiplash” means that your neck has extended and contracted very quickly during a sudden stop. This forward and backward motion damages your neck (and sometimes upper shoulder) muscles, tendons, and ligaments.

Whiplash generally causes soreness in the neck and makes it difficult to perform normal movements like turning your head and, in some situations, even holding your head up. There is no official test to determine whether you have whiplash, and it’s not usually associated with any physical damage apart from general pain. In some cases, the tendons or ligaments may tear, but those circumstances are rare.

Back Injuries and Damage

Damage to the spinal cord, vertebrae, and discs are very common in car accidents. Your body wasn’t designed to be contracted or restricted in the way it does during an accident, so abnormal movement can cause injuries.

Common back issues following an accident include:

• Herniated disc (also known as a bulging, slipped, or ruptured disc)
• Spinal fractures
• Spinal stenosis (while not caused directly, this condition often develops faster than it otherwise would)
• Spondylolisthesis (stress fractures cause the vertebrae to move out of place)
• Spinal cord injuries

Your back helps you more than you may realize. So, when you suddenly have mobility issues or chronic pain, it can significantly decrease your quality of life.

What Should I Do After a Car Accident?

If you were in an accident, you should do a few things immediately—including reporting the incident to the police and getting medical attention as soon as you can. Even if you think the injuries are minor, it’s still a good idea to get checked over by a doctor. It’s hard to tell how serious your injuries are because of the adrenaline running through your body, masking pain and mobility issues.

Following up on your medical treatment as recommended is also extremely important. Not only is it good for your overall health and recovery, but it also helps your car accident case as well. Follow up shows that you’re taking your injuries seriously and want to continue to heal and improve after a crash.

You should also talk to a Woodstock car accident attorney as soon as you can after the incident. Getting an attorney involved early will help you investigate the incident more effectively and interact with an insurance company in an appropriate way that won’t undermine your case down the road, particularly if you want to negotiate with the insurance company or head to court.
