How Boat Accidents Happen
Boat accidents can involve many different factors. It can be challenging to determine who was at fault. Thankfully, a boat accident lawyer will know how to uncover the truth of what happened.
If someone’s negligence caused your accident, they are legally liable. You can bring a case against the responsible party for your damages.
Common causes of boat accidents include:
- Careless or reckless operator behavior
- Speeding
- Operating a boat while distracted
- Defective boat parts
- Poorly-trained operators or personnel
Most of the time, a person has been careless in some way. However, boat accidents can occur because of defective parts. A manufacturer might be responsible for all injuries and damages.
An investigation is usually necessary to determine fault. One or more parties might be liable for the costs of the boat accident. If you were injured, it’s important to know who is responsible for your damages.
Boating Laws in Georgia
The laws for operating a boat are different from driving a car. According to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR), three categories of people can use boats:
- Less than 12 years of age
- Between 12 and 15 years of age
- 16 years of age or above
Each category has different rules for what types of boats they can operate. Young minors can be out on the water handling a large vessel. Even with adult supervision, this can become dangerous.

Typical Boat Accident Injuries
A boat accident can cause many types of injuries. For example, the boat could collide with another vessel or object on the water. Passengers might get thrown from the boat or suffer injuries onboard.
Common injuries from boating accidents include:
- Traumatic brain injuries (TBI)
- Broken bones
- Head and neck injuries
- Spinal cord injuries
