Common Causes of Negligent Motorcycle Rider Accidents
Motorcycle riders are at the highest risk for an accident within the first year of riding. Inexperienced riders can cause severe crashes and injuries. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), bikers are about 28 times more likely than car occupants to die in an accident.
A biker must be careful to ride safety every time they get onto the road. An experienced biker is more likely to cause an accident. Younger riders also have a higher risk of crashing.
Many factors contribute to motorcycle accidents. Road conditions, lack of experience, and speeding are just a few examples. Let’s look at some of the most common causes of biker accidents.
Inexperienced Motorcycle Riders
Just like with new drivers, inexperienced motorcyclists are riskier. A new biker is still learning how to control their vehicle correctly. They are less familiar with how to handle every road situation.
If an experienced rider is not careful, they can cause an accident. If you were the victim of this type of accident, talk to a lawyer. You could be entitled to compensation for your injuries.
Drunk Riding
In 2017, 28% of bikers killed in crashes were alcohol-impaired, according to the NHTSA. The riders who died also had higher blood alcohol content (BAC) percentages than other drivers.
Alcohol is a problem with motorcycle accidents. If a rider is under the influence of alcohol, they’re more likely to make mistakes. Just one bad mistake can lead to a severe or deadly accident.
Excessive Speeding
Motorcycles are freeing for many riders. They enjoy the feeling of freedom on the open road. While the excitement is understandable, bikers must be careful to ride safely.
Motorcyclists are more inclined to speed on Smyrna roads. Unfortunately, excessive speeding increases the risk of severe damages. Victims can suffer life-threatening injuries or death.
High-Performance Motorcycles
High-performance motorcycles have a build for racing. They can go incredibly fast and often encourage fast riding.
High-performance bikes are involved in a higher number of crashes. They also tend to cause more severe accidents and injuries.
Distracted Riding
Operating a motor vehicle while distracted is incredibly dangerous. It’s even worse if a biker rides while distracted. Examples of distracted driving can include:
- Texting while driving
- Eating or drinking
- Talking on the phone
- Talking to a passenger
- Looking somewhere away from the road
Even a moment of distraction can lead to a life-threatening accident.
Lane Splitting
Lane splitting laws vary by state and location. In Georgia, lane splitting — driving between traffic lanes — is illegal (Georgia Code Section 40-6-312). Riding between lanes can easily lead to an accident.
Left-Hand Turns
Left-hand turns are dangerous in any situation. However, motorists are more likely to miss a biker while turning left at an intersection.
A driver might fail to see a biker as they start turning. If a motorcyclist tries to pass without enough room, it can cause a deadly crash.
Visibility Issues
Motorcycles are much smaller than most vehicles. If both bikers and drivers are not careful, they can crash.
Drivers must be careful to watch for motorcyclists on Smyrna roads. In turn, bikers should provide plenty of warning before merging, turning, or riding near blind spots. If a driver does not see a biker in time, an accident can occur.
Unsafe Road Conditions
Hazardous road conditions are risky for motorcycle riders. Cars and trucks have more safety features to protect occupants during inclement conditions. However, bikers do not have much protection at all.
Motorcycle riders must watch for changing road conditions. They should adjust their speed and riding behavior to stay safe. If a rider loses control of their bike, it can affect multiple drivers.
Examples of typical road hazards include:
- Dead animals
- Potholes
- Road debris
- Fallen trees
- Uneven roads
Bad weather conditions like ice or rain are also risky for bikers. If an inexperienced rider is not careful, they can cause a severe crash.
What to Do After a Smyrna Motorcycle Accident
If a negligent motorcycle rider caused your accident, you need to protect your rights. You’ll need to show that the rider was responsible for your accident. Your insurance claim should also prove your damages.
Here are some ways you can begin building a strong injury claim.
Report the Accident
If there were injuries or vehicle damage, call the police. Tell them that the motorcycle rider was negligent. Officers should create an accident report that you’ll need for your records.
Exchange Information
Get the following information from the rider and anyone else involved in the accident:
- First and last name
- Contact information
- Insurance information
- License plate number
- Driver’s license number
You will need the rider’s insurance information to file a claim. If the motorcycle rider was negligent in your accident, their insurance company should cover your damages.
Document the Scene
Preserve the accident scene as best as possible:
- Take pictures of your injuries and vehicle damage.
- Photograph the entire accident scene.
- Talk to witnesses. Ask for their contact information.
- Note the date, time, and location of the accident.
Get Medical Treatment
See a doctor as soon as possible, even if you feel okay. If you wait too long to get treatment, it will hurt your case. Also, save all medical bills and receipts.
Call a Lawyer
Contact an experienced motorcycle accident lawyer. Your lawyer can help you start building a strong injury claim. They will know where to start and how to fight for your rights.
