Common Motorcycle Defects that Cause Accidents
A motorcycle defect or malfunction can cause an accident at any time.
Some issues are preventable if the motorist keeps up with maintenance. However, other defects happen out of nowhere. A mechanic or manufacturer could be to blame for problems that weren’t obvious.
Here are some of the most common accident-related defects we see. If any defect caused your crash, reach out to a lawyer for help.
Brake Defects
Brake defects are some of the most deadly vehicle issues. Without proper brakes, a bike cannot slow down or stop to avoid a collision. Defective brakes can injure the motorcyclist and many others on Smyrna roads.
If brake failure caused your accident, you’ll need to investigate. Your lawyer can determine where the issue started. Typically, a company is liable for the problem.
Defective Designs
Manufacturers must be careful when producing motorcycles. If they are not diligent, dangerous design defects can happen. Design issues can lead to an increased risk of collisions.
Fuel System Defects
Fuel system problems can cause burns, leg injuries, and more. Signs of motorcycle fuel pump issues include:
- Trouble starting the engine
- Whining sounds from the tank
- The motorcycle surging forward while driving it
Fuel pump issues can cause an accident or leave a rider stranded without help.
Tire Defects
Tire-related defects can cause blowouts. The tread can separate from the tire and cause an accident. If a biker cannot maintain control, it can lead to a severe crash.
Manufacturing Issues
If a motorcycle is improperly manufactured, it can cause many different issues. The bike can malfunction at any time, leading to an accident. Weak bike parts can also increase the risk of an accident.
Sometimes, a biker won’t know about a defect until it’s too late. It’s vital to know who is responsible for what led to the accident.
How Liability Works in a Defective Parts Motorcycle Accident
Defective parts-related motorcycle accidents can vary widely. If defects led to your accident, you’ll need to know where the problem began. The at-fault parties in this type of crash are often:
- Motorcycle companies
- Maintenance companies
- Manufacturing companies
Sometimes, the bike owner is at fault for failing to keep up with maintenance. Or, they might have known about a defect but was unable to do anything about it. However, a company is often liable for the damages when a deficiency causes a crash.
Under Georgia law, the at-fault party in an accident is responsible for the costs. If you did not cause your accident, you can seek compensation through a personal injury claim. Your claim can pursue recovery for:
- Medical costs
- Lost wages
- Vehicle damage
- Pain and suffering
More than one party can be partially at fault for an accident. Under Georgia Code Section 51-12-33, an injured party can still recover damages if they were less than 50% at fault. If you’re concerned about the responsibility in your crash, talk to an experienced lawyer today.

Other Causes of Motorcycle Accidents in Smyrna
Motorcycle accidents occur for many different reasons. Most of the time, a negligent driver’s actions lead to the crash.
Besides defective parts, here are some common causes of motorcycle accidents we see.
Failure to See the Motorcycle
Motorcycles are much smaller than other vehicles. If a driver is not watching for smaller bikes, they can hit a motorcyclist. Drivers often fail to provide enough space for bikers.
Distracted Driving
Distracted driving is a problem in Smyrna. Within moments, a driver can take their eyes off the road and cause an accident. Bikers are especially vulnerable to distracted driving because they’re harder to see.
Poor Lane Changes
Motorcycles have the same right to the road as other drivers. However, many motorists fail to account for bikers.
A driver might not check for smaller vehicles before merging. If they change lanes where a motorcycle is riding, it can cause a severe accident.
Speeding
Excessive speeds can make it harder for motorists to stop. Speeding is common with motorcycle accidents.
Aggressive Driving
Some drivers do not understand motorcyclists’ rights in Smyrna. A driver might assume the biker is in their way. Aggressive or reckless drivers are more likely to cause motorcycle-related accidents.
Road Hazards
Motorcycle riders are more at risk when a road hazard exists. Examples of dangerous road conditions include:
- Potholes
- Car debris
- Uneven pavement
- Dead animals
While a driver can roll over many objects untouched, a motorcyclist can suffer severe injuries.

- The party owed you a duty of care.
- The party breached its duty of care.
- The breached duty led to your accident.
- You suffered injuries because of the crash.
Motorcycle accident cases involving defective parts are complicated. It’s best to work with an experience Smyrna lawyer. Your lawyer will gather evidence of the other party’s fault and your damages.
