What to Do If You Slip and Fall in North Druid Hills, GA
The moments after a slip and fall accident are significant. Although working with a slip and fall lawyer is always recommended, there are things you can do before you even contact your lawyer. If you can, focus on getting information at the scene and in the days following the accident.
Here are some steps we recommend taking to legally protect yourself after slipping and falling on someone’s private property or at a business in North Druid Hills.
Take Pictures at the Scene
If you are well enough to do so, use your phone or a camera to take pictures of the scene after your fall. Snap photos of:
- The hazard or dangerous condition that caused your slip and fall
- Your injuries
- The entire accident scene and
- Anything else that you think helps show what occurred
Picture evidence can be really powerful in a slip and fall accident case. Chances are good that the hazard or dangerous condition that led to your fall will be cleaned up or removed quickly after you report the accident. However, taking a picture preserves the scene forever.
Including pictures from the scene in your slip and fall claim will help demonstrate what happened and back up your accounts of what happened.
Report the Accident
If your slip and fall accident happened on someone’s private property, make sure the property owner knows that you fell and were injured. If you fell at a business, ask to be taken to the store’s manager. Make sure they understand that you fell and were hurt because of the hazard that caused it.
Get the property owner’s or manager’s full name and contact information. A store manager might also fill out an accident report.
Be Careful What You Say
Even though it’s human nature for many to be polite and apologize after a fall, avoid saying “sorry” or verbally blaming yourself for the accident. If you admit any of the blame, it could be used against you later.
Keep in mind that even if you are partially at fault the accident, Georgia law dictates that you can still seek compensation as long as you’re less than 50% at fault in an injury accident (Georgia Code section 51-22-33). So, avoid discussing fault or blame until after you’ve spoken to a North Druid Hills slip and fall lawyer first.
Talk to Witnesses
If anyone else on the property might have seen your fall or the hazard that caused it, talk to them and ask for their names and contact information.
Your lawyer will want to contact witnesses later to get witness statements to support your case. These can be incredibly helpful in backing up a slip and fall claim.
Get Medical Attention
Right after the accident, if you have very serious or life-threatening injuries, don’t delay getting emergency medical treatment. Otherwise, be sure to see your doctor as soon as possible after gathering the above information at the scene.
Even if you feel okay after the accident, get checked out by a doctor just in case. Seeing a doctor will:
- Create the first record of your medical treatment
- Show the insurance company that you got medical attention soon after the accident and
- Give you an idea of what your treatment will look like

How Much It Costs to Hire a Slip and Fall Lawyer
Many injury victims worry about hiring a lawyer for help because of the cost. However, the good news is that most slip and fall lawyers work on contingency. This essentially means that there is no upfront cost to hire them—and you don’t pay at all unless they win you money.
If your lawyer does win you a settlement or award, their fee is simply taken as a percentage of what they win for you. So, there’s no cost out-of-pocket and no risk to begin working with them immediately.
