What Makes Hit-and-Run Claims Different
A hit-and-run case is different from a typical car wreck claim because the at-fault driver may be unknown. That can make it harder to identify the right insurance policy, gather evidence, and prove what happened.
Even when police do not locate the other driver right away, you may still have a path to compensation. In many cases, your own uninsured motorist coverage may apply if the fleeing driver cannot be found or had no insurance.
Our College Park personal injury lawyers work to build your claim from every available source. That can include crash reports, witness accounts, nearby surveillance footage, medical records, and vehicle damage evidence.
What to Do After a Hit and Run Accident in College Park
The steps you take after a crash can affect your health and your claim. If you are physically able, try to stay calm and focus on safety first.
You should seek medical care as soon as possible, even if you think your injuries are minor. Some injuries take hours or days to fully appear, and prompt treatment also creates a record linking your condition to the collision.
Helpful actions after a hit-and-run crash include:
- Calling 911 and reporting the accident right away
- Getting medical treatment as soon as possible
- Taking photos of the scene, your vehicle, and visible injuries
- Writing down anything you remember about the fleeing vehicle
- Speaking with witnesses and getting their contact information
How We Investigate the Crash
A strong claim often depends on how quickly the investigation begins. We move to collect evidence before it disappears.
That may include reviewing police records, checking for traffic or security cameras, inspecting damage patterns, and identifying businesses or homes near the crash scene that may have footage.
Evidence That Can Support Your Case
Different forms of evidence can help show how the collision happened and who may be responsible. Even small details can matter in a hit-and-run case.
We often look for:
- Video from stores, homes, or nearby intersections
- Statements from passengers, pedestrians, or other drivers
- Photos of debris, skid marks, and paint transfer
- Medical records connecting your injuries to the crash
- Insurance policy documents for available coverage

Distance is no obstacle. We work with clients across the country and make sure every one of them feels taken care of, no matter how far the call travels.
Insurance Issues You May Face
After a hit-and-run accident, insurance questions often become the center of the case. You may be dealing with your own insurer rather than the other driver’s company, which can still lead to disputes over coverage and payment.
Your uninsured motorist policy may cover medical expenses, lost income, pain and suffering, and other losses, depending on your policy terms. MedPay or collision coverage may also play a part in paying for treatment or vehicle repairs.
Insurance companies may ask for recorded statements or seek documents early in the process. Before you agree to anything, it helps to know what your policy covers and how your words may affect your claim.
Damages You May Claim After a Hit and Run Accident
The losses in a hit-and-run case often go beyond the cost of fixing your car. A serious injury can affect your work, your daily routine, and your long-term health.
You may be able to seek damages for:
- Medical bills and future treatment costs
- Lost wages and reduced earning ability
- Pain and suffering
- Property damage and related expenses
- Emotional distress and mental anguish
If a loved one died in the crash, surviving family members may have a wrongful death claim. That may include funeral costs, lost financial support, and other losses tied to the death.
Why Timing Matters in College Park Cases
Waiting too long can make a claim harder to prove. Surveillance footage may be erased, witnesses may forget details, and insurance deadlines may pass.
Georgia law also limits how long you have to file many personal injury lawsuits. The statute of limitations for these cases is generally two years. While every case is different, acting early gives you a better chance to preserve evidence and protect your rights.
A College Park car accident attorney can also help deal with insurer requests before mistakes happen. Early legal guidance may prevent you from accepting less than your case is worth.

How Fault Can Still Be Proven
Even if the other driver is unknown, fault can still be shown through evidence. Vehicle damage, roadway markings, injury patterns, and witness statements can all help reconstruct the event.
In some cases, another party may share blame for the crash. For example, an employer may be liable if the fleeing driver was working at the time, or a vehicle owner may be involved under certain facts.
We also review whether any roadway or vehicle issues played a part. A careful review can reveal more than one source of recovery in a claim that first seemed limited.
