Defective Vehicle Design or Manufacturing Issues
Vehicle designs can be intricate. If you suspect that defects caused your accident, it’s time to investigate. Contact a car accident lawyer who can help you determine the cause.
Let’s look at some common vehicle defects that contribute to car accidents.
Car Defects Contributing to an Accident
Vehicle defects can occur during the design or manufacture of a vehicle. The entire vehicle could be defective, or there might be an issue with a single vehicle component.
A defective part might not be evident at first. You might just know that “something went wrong” and caused your accident. It’s usually necessary to look closer for internal issues.
Examples of defects that can cause accidents include:
- Defective tires
- Steering failure
- Defective cruise control
- Brake failure
- Car stalling
- Airbag issues
- Poor vehicle stability
- Sudden braking or acceleration
- Brake-shift interlock failure
A professional will need to examine your car for issues. Your lawyer can help you know the best place for an inspection. You will need to understand precisely what went wrong before filing an insurance claim.
Vehicle Crashworthiness Defects
Crashworthiness is a crucial term for modern vehicles. Unfortunately, accidents still happen on Smyrna roads. Crashworthiness is about preventing injuries as much as possible during a crash.
When a car is crashworthy, the manufacturer designed it to protect passengers. A crashworthy car should prevent issues like passenger ejection, fires, or airbag issues during a crash.
Here are some examples of crashworthiness defects:
- Airbag failure
- Seatback collapse
- Crumple zone defects
- Unsafe roof design
- Defective doors
- Jack lift issues
Under the crashworthiness doctrine, manufacturers can be liable for defects. This is different from the direct damage from an accident. The manufacturer could be responsible if errors caused additional damage during the crash.
If the above issues don’t describe your situation, don’t worry. There are many ways that car defects may contribute to a collision. Talk to a lawyer who can let you know your legal options.

Liability Laws for Vehicle Defects in Smyrna
Design or manufacturing defects typically mean a product liability case. A product manufacturer can be liable for damages if their product causes injuries. The product must not have been “merchantable” and usable as intended.
You might need to prove the following:
- The vehicle or component had defects when the accident happened.
- The defective design or manufacture of the car caused your injuries.
- The car or its parts were in the same condition as when they left the manufacturer.
- You were using the vehicle or its components as the manufacturer meant.
You do not need to prove that you bought the vehicle or its parts to have a case. If a loved one died because of the accident, you might have a wrongful death case.
Car designers and manufacturers have legal duties. They should ensure that their products are reasonably safe. People use cars every day, and they expect them to be safe to use.
If a defect caused your injuries, the manufacturer could be liable. Talk to a lawyer today about bringing a legal case. You might have a product liability claim or lawsuit.
How to Show that Defective Car Parts Caused Your Accident
Building this type of case is complicated. You and your lawyer will need to do a lot of investigation. You’ll also need to determine who was liable for your accident. More than one party could be at fault.
You might need to take actions like:
- Getting pictures from the accident scene
- Researching the company that manufactured your car
- Looking at maintenance logs
- Keeping track of your damages
Your lawyer might hire experts to investigate the case. There are many moving parts when an accident involves a vehicle defect. If another driver contributed to the accident, your lawyer can help you file a personal injury claim, too.
You should not have to pay for an accident you did not cause. At the very least, contact an experienced lawyer for a free consultation. You can ask questions and figure out your legal options.
