Fatal Car Accident Stats in Peachtree Corners
As one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States, Atlanta, and its surrounding suburbs, like Peachtree Corners, have more than 498,000 residents that call the city home and send thousands of drivers out onto the road each day to go to work, school, and more. Additionally, major highways, such as I-85 and I-75, run through Atlanta to and from other destinations in the country as the main arteries for millions of other drivers.
Because of that sky-high number of drivers on the roads, our Peachtree Corners personal injury lawyers understand that there is a higher risk of car accidents, including those that are fatal. In 2020, in fact, according to the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS), 1,664 people died in car crashes in the state of Georgia.
That total number further breaks down the fatalities based on vehicle type:
- 581 people in cars
- 483 occupants in pickups and SUVs
- 29 people in large trucks
- 192 motorcyclists
- 279 pedestrians
- 32 bicyclists

What to Know About Fatal Car Accidents and Road Defects
Because of the heavy congestion on major roads throughout Georgia, combined with poor design and a large number of storms over the last decade, the state’s highways and rural roads have been left in dangerously poor condition. These road defects can then lead to safety issues, which can then lead to fatal car accidents because of structural problems, such as:
- Potholes
- Road depressions
- Sinkholes
- Drainage problems
- Cracking asphalt
- Uncleared debris on the road
- Uneven pavement
- Missing or faded lines
A fatal car accident lawyer can help you hold the state liable for road defects by proving that:
- There have been problems with this road before.
- The government either knew or should have known about the poor road conditions.
- The state government was negligent in maintaining the road.
- The state government failed to warn drivers about potential road defects or conditions that could affect driving.
How Defective Auto Parts Cause Fatal Car Accidents
Manufacturers and businesses that design original or after-market auto parts are held to a strict liability standard over a negligence standard. In other words, they can be sued when defective parts fail if express or implied warranties are breached. Distributors and retailers can also be held accountable for defective auto parts.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has the authority to issue car safety standards. If NHTSA issues a recall, the part makers and car manufacturers are required by law to inform the owners of the car that use that part.
Damages that Can be Recovered in a Fatal Accident
While there is never a dollar value that can truly be placed on human life, family members in Georgia may recover compensation for the damages from the death of their loved one in a fatal car accident. Damages in a wrongful death case because of a fatal car accident include:
- Medical costs and lifesaving actions provided to the victim at the hospital or scene of the accident
- Funeral costs
- Lost future wages of the deceased
- Pain and suffering of the deceased prior to death
