Causes of Catastrophic Injuries
Many accidents can lead to catastrophic injuries. One of the most common accidents referenced is motor vehicle accidents. The impact when a car, truck, or motorcycle collides with other vehicles can cause your body to experience immense trauma.
Aside from motor vehicle accidents, premises liability accidents can also lead to catastrophic injuries. Some premises liability accidents that can cause you to experience severe physical trauma include slip and fall accidents, amusement park accidents, and swimming pool accidents.
Damages You Can Claim from Catastrophic Injuries
When your accident results in a catastrophic injury, you will be financially responsible for several types of damages. One of those damages is medical expenses, which will be the most expensive. People with catastrophic injuries have no choice but to become reliant on medical services to survive.
Some of these medical services include:
- Rehabilitation services
- In-home medical care
- Surgical treatment
- Medical equipment
- Pain medications
- Speech and physical therapy
Unlike victims who only use these services for a temporary amount of time, you will have to pay for these medical services for the duration of your life.
Missed Wages
Another significant damage is the amount of missed wages from your occupation. While coming to terms with your new injury, you must consider leaving your current employment. When you experience a catastrophic injury, your injury will require you to reconsider every aspect of your life, including your occupation.
Where you could perform your job duties with no issue before, you will need new accommodations if you want to continue to work in your desired field. In most cases, you will no longer be able to work and may have to apply for disability benefits.
Pain and Suffering
Another damage from catastrophic injuries is pain and suffering. The factors of your accident can cause you to experience physical pain and emotional anguish. Even after you have received medical care for your injuries, you can still experience pain afterward.
The emotional anguish you experience after your accident can make recovery even more difficult. The trauma that you’ve experienced from your accident can do tremendous damage to your psyche.
Loss of Enjoyment of Life
Another damage from a catastrophic injury is the loss of enjoyment of life. The loss of enjoyment of life is the significant change in your quality of life after an accident. Your catastrophic injury consumes every aspect of your life, from your employment to the time you can spend with your family and friends.
This significant loss can cause you to experience mental disorders like depression. This damage allows you to be compensated for the losses that cannot necessarily be replaced.
In-Home Medical Care
If you have suffered a traumatic brain injury or paralysis, you might require around-the-clock care. This can be done in your own home or at a facility where you are required to live. In-home medical care is expensive. Your health insurance might not cover all of the related costs.
That is why you need to work with a catastrophic injuries lawyer in Locust Grove about your case.
Renovations to Your Home
If you or a loved one was paralyzed in an accident, you might need to have renovations performed on your home to make it wheelchair accessible. This could include the construction of a ramp, building a first-floor bedroom and bathroom, and much more. Compensation from a lawsuit can help pay for these renovations.
Suing for Compensation
Your catastrophic injury takes so many tangible and intangible things from you. While some of these damages cannot be fully recovered, you can at least recover the maximum financial compensation you deserve. If your catastrophic injury was caused by a negligent truck driver, motorist, property owner, motorcyclist, or construction company, you can hold that party accountable in your lawsuit.
If several parties can be held liable for your catastrophic injuries, you can sue all parties in your lawsuit.
How to Obtain Greater Amounts of Compensation
There are many benefits to filing a lawsuit against the parties who caused your accident. One of the benefits is that you can be rewarded with greater amounts of compensation for your injuries. In civil court, you are rewarded larger compensation based on the serious nature of your injuries.
The purpose of personal injury law is to make the plaintiff feel “whole” after their accident. Because there is little chance of recovering from your catastrophic injuries, the judge or jury will be more inclined to reward you with the maximum compensation you request.

How Insurance Companies Will Refute Your Claims
Even though everyone knows that catastrophic injury victims are entitled to larger compensation amounts, insurance adjusters will attempt to discredit their claims to avoid paying them. One of the common methods that insurance companies use to discredit their claims is reducing the liability their client is responsible for.
The client’s liability will be reduced or eliminated by insinuating that the victim had some responsibility in the accident. Another common method is tricking the victim into submitting additional information about the accident that adjusters can use to search for contradictions.
