Pierce Johnson and the Braves in 2025
Despite the Braves’ struggles during the 2025 season, Pierce Johnson has remained a dependable and effective relief pitcher. Over 44 appearances, he’s posted a solid 2.41 ERA with 43 strikeouts in 41 innings pitched, while maintaining a strong 1.00 WHIP.
Johnson relies on his signature curveball, which is still one of the most effective breaking balls in the Majors. The Braves entered August well behind the division-leading Phillies, but Johnson will have plenty of opportunities to shine as the season moves into its final phase.

Johnson’s Path to Atlanta
The Chicago Cubs selected Johnson 43rd overall in the 2012 MLB draft. He was initially drafted out of high school in 2009 by the Tampa Bay Rays, but chose to play college baseball at Missouri State University instead.
Johnson showed early promise but struggled with inconsistency and injuries. After short stints with the Cubs and San Francisco Giants, he revitalized his career in 2019 with Japan’s Hanshin Tigers, where he posted a 1.38 ERA and earned All-Star honors.
He returned to Major League Baseball in 2020 with the San Diego Padres and established himself as a reliable bullpen arm, though injuries again limited his 2022 season. He signed with the Colorado Rockies in 2023 before being traded mid-season to the Atlanta Braves.
