What Should You Do First After an Uber Accident?

Being involved in an Uber accident can be a disorienting and stressful experience. Whether you’re a passenger, an Uber driver, or another motorist, the moments immediately following a collision are crucial. Your actions in these initial moments can significantly impact your safety, health, and any potential legal or insurance claims that may arise.

Uber car accidents are just like other car crashes in a lot of ways, and you need to know what to do after a car accident. However, there are specific steps you can take in an Uber accident.

1. Call the Police

After an Uber accident, it’s crucial to contact law enforcement immediately to ensure they document the incident. Rather than leaving the scene, remain with the Uber driver until the police arrive. While you might be inclined to arrange alternative transportation and continue your journey, resist this urge.

Police officers will interview all available parties to construct a comprehensive understanding of the event and its causes. Their report often includes an assessment of fault, which can be valuable for any subsequent legal proceedings or insurance claims.

2. Get Everyone’s Contact Information

Collect contact details from all parties involved in the accident, including your Uber driver, other drivers, and any passengers. As determining fault isn’t always immediately clear, gathering comprehensive information from everyone present is essential. This thorough approach ensures you have all the necessary details for potential insurance claims or legal actions that may arise later.

3. Report the Incident

You should also take steps to report the incident to a few key entities:

• Your insurance company
• Uber (so they can report it to their insurance company)
• The other driver’s insurance company

Promptly filing reports with all potentially relevant insurance providers is advisable. Many insurance policies stipulate specific timeframes for claim submissions following an accident. Failing to act swiftly could jeopardize your eligibility for compensation covering your damages and losses.

4. Talk to an Uber Accident Lawyer in Georgia

Uber accidents can be very complicated from a legal perspective. It’s a good idea to talk to an attorney as soon as you can after this type of accident. Your lawyer will help you make the right moves so you can get the most out of your claim.

Is There Insurance Coverage if an Uber Is in an Accident?

If you aren’t driving, your auto insurance coverage likely won’t apply in a motor vehicle accident.

So, how does insurance work? Uber has its own insurance coverage that applies while you are riding in a vehicle driven by an Uber driver. That policy covers $1 million in liability coverage and another $1 million in uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage.

Normally, liability insurance will only address claims made by the other driver involved in the accident. However, because your Uber driver could be partially at fault for your injuries, that coverage will apply to you, too. That generally means that you must share that $1 million in coverage with another driver and potentially several passengers as well.
