Lunch was interrupted at a Marietta Waffle House when an SUV plowed into the restaurant.
The incident occurred at the Waffle House on Sandy Plains Road near Post Oak Tritt.
One witness, Hannah Shlapak, was meeting her mother at the restaurant for lunch when she heard the deafening crash of a Honda Element crashing into the building. She stated that all of the Waffle House workers were running around, making sure that the diners were okay. Shlapak herself ran to the aid of an elderly woman who fell in the parking lot. She had been scared by the noise of the vehicle plowing into the building.
A spokesperson for Waffle House told news reporters that there were no serious injuries resulting from the accident.
Police said that the driver of the Honda Element was a man in his 60s. He had just finished lunch at the restaurant when the accident occurred. He and his wife had been in the vehicle at the time of the accident. The man told police that his vehicle went forward instead of into reverse.
Shlapak shared a photo of the man after the accident, noting that he seemed calm, but embarrassed about the accident.
The restaurant will work to make sure that the building is structurally sound before repairing the windows and reopening.
