It was recently reported that a settlement for Volkswagen owners affected by the Dieselgate scandal had been proposed. Nearly 500,000 vehicles are affected by the scandal in the U.S. alone. Now, Volkswagen dealers are expecting restitution as well for their troubles.
The dealers who met with Volkswagen AG on July 15 were promised restitution for the financial penalties they have incurred as a result of the scandal, which broke last year.
At a meeting involving 150 dealers held in the northeast United States on Friday, July 15, a senior American executive made the pledge to offer dealers restitution. The meeting lasted more than three hours.
This is the first time that restitution to the dealers has been discussed to compensate for the economic damage they have had to endure due to the scandal.
Volkswagen is holding meetings nationwide to discuss with the various dealers how they the company will be implementing the $15 billion settlement reached with the government last month.
During the meeting, Volkswagen gave dealers a detailed timeline on how the buyback and repair program will be implemented. Owners of the affected vehicles will be able to sell their cars back to dealers or fix their vehicles beginning in October, pending final approval of the settlement. The buyback program is expected to continue through the end of 2018.
For owners who want their vehicles fixed, a software fix for third-generation vehicles would be available in October. First generation vehicles will have a “hardware/software modification” available in January. Second generation vehicles will have a software update available in February. Third generation vehicles are expected to have a hardware fix available in October 2017.
U.S. environmental authorities have not yet approved the fixes for the nearly 500,000 vehicles affected by the scandal.
In addition to the 500,000 vehicles currently on the road needing fixes, there are an additional 12,000 vehicles sitting on dealer lots, unable to be sold.
