Sometimes the best way to prevent tragedy is to provide graphic reminders of what can happen. Most high school graduates remember the sometimes graphic presentations on what happens when someone decided to drink or do drugs. They also did this for drunk driving on occasion. ABC News reports on a viral Facebook post reminds parents of the importance of car seats.
Since posting the pictures of the twisted wreckage of her car on Tuesday, September 29, Jenna Casado Rabberman’s post has been shared nearly 100,000 times. What makes the post so special is despite the horrific wreckage of her car, the two car seats inside were completely intact.
Robberman was driving with her two young sons, who were both secured in the car seats. Despite the car being completely totaled, her sons were uninjured.
Alisa Baer, who is known as the “Car Seat Lady” is an expert on car seat safety. She says this is not the first time she has seen car seats keep children from being injured in otherwise horrific accidents.
Baer shared the four most overlooked things when it comes to car seats and their proper usage:
- Whether moving from a rear facing to a front facing car seat or from a 5-point restraint to a booster seat or from the booster seat to simply a seat belt, many parents transition too soon.
- Not using the tether strap. Every forward facing car seat is manufactured with one and every vehicle manufactured after 2000 comes with 3 places to secure it. The tether strap reduces head movement by 4 to 6 inches.
- Everyone, including adults, need to be properly belted. Even in the back seat. Studies indicate that unbelted people can become human missiles, injuring others in the car. If a person is without a seat belt, they may be three times more likely to die in a crash.
- Check to ensure that the car seat is fitted snugly in the seat. Also check to ensure the child is fitted snugly in the seat.
Car seats, as well as safety belts are two of the most important factions in automobile crashes when it comes to preventing major injuries and fatalities.
