The incident occurred around 7:40 am on June 30. The driver of a silver Mercedes-Benz SUV arrived at the facility for a visit when she lost control of the vehicle and accelerated. She crashed into several other cars and trucks before crashing into the Piedmont Hospital building.
A review of the video shows her coming to a near stop behind a red SUV that was getting ready to receive a person in a wheelchair at what appears to be a drop-off area, before suddenly accelerating, sending the people at the red SUV rushing out of the way. She rammed the red SUV out of the way and went crashing into the building. Internal video shows her crashing through walls while doctors, nurses, and other staff ran screaming out of her path.
One 55-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene and several other people were seriously injured. Police did not believe the crash was deliberate and have not filed charges, but have not released the reason why the driver lost control of the vehicle.
