WRBL CBS News reported recently that a long-term DeKalb County Police Department officer was killed on the morning of Saturday, January 2 at the scene of a motor vehicle accident after being hit by another car at the accident scene in downtown Atlanta.
According to the DeKalb County Police Chief, the officer, a 22-year veteran of the police force, had just stopped along the Downtown Connector, the combined Interstate 75 / Interstate 85 highway, to assist at the scene of a motor vehicle accident involving another officer and was exiting his patrol vehicle when the incident happened.
According to officials from the Georgia State Patrol, the driver of a Ford Focus lost control of his car as he negotiated the curve, struck the concrete barrier wall in the center of the highway, and then struck the police officer and his patrol car. The officer was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital nearby, where he died of the injuries he sustained in the accident.
