In August of 2010, due to unreasonably high revision rates, hip replacement devices manufactured by DePuy were recalled. Among the recalled devices were the company’s ASR XL Acetabular System total hip replacement as well as the ASR (Articular Surface Replacement) Hip Resurfacing System.
The company, DePuy Orthopaedics, is a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson. It recalled the devices which had been used in an estimated 93,000 patients because the devices had failed to satisfy “clinical expectations.”
According to a study conducted in the UK by an independent registry, data regarding the implants showed a 5-year revision surgery rates for ASR implants was estimated between 12-13 percent. Additional preliminary evidence presented in the first DePuy ASR trials, however, indicated that the rate may have been even higher in showing as much as 40 percent of the ASR hip replacements failing within the first five years after hip replacement surgery.
Since the voluntary hip replacement recall by DePuy was announced, thousands have patients who received the devices have filed lawsuits seeking damages for complications as well as revision surgery costs and other damages that are directly related to the devices.
DePuy recommended that patients who had been implanted with the ASR devices consult with their surgeon for a postoperative evaluation even if they were not currently experiencing any complications from the surgery or the implantation of the ASR device. Tests which include blood tests, x-rays, MRI’s and ultrasounds could help in determining whether any bone damage, metal poisoning or other symptoms indicate any sign of premature hip implant failure.
Symptoms of premature implant failure can include such symptoms as swelling, chronic pain and difficulty in walking or standing. It is also possible for patients to experience hip fractures or dislocation, heavy metal poisoning or infection.
