Today we have a story brought by 11 Alive that details the heroism by our local police officers. If these two weren’t there at the scene, a driver would have burned to death on I-20.
Officer Wellington was working at Fulton Industrial Boulevard and I-20 when she heard a wreck. Smoke starting coming from the scene and she rushed toward it. An off-duty officer, officer Still, also saw the wreckage. They smashed the window open with a police baton and pulled the driver out.
The crash happened between the car and an 18-wheeler, though we don’t know the details of how the crashed happened or who might have been at fault. Charges are pending. The injured driver was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. The brave officers were treated for smoke inhalation. The driver of the semi refused treatment.
Traffic was snarled on I-20 for hours while the accident was cleared.
We want to commend the bravery of the officers for saving this person’s life. Thank you for doing what you do to protect the citizens of Atlanta.
