A Florida man rear-ended a stopped school bus in a horrific accident Wednesday in Bacon County, located in south Georgia, but then sacrificed his life pulling kids to safety in the aftermath of the wreck.
WSAV.com reported on this tragic accident, which occurred around 4 pm on Wednesday afternoon. According to preliminary investigation by the Georgia State Patrol, ten children were riding on a school bus as it stopped to unload students when a Ryder rental truck, driven by a 25-year-old man from Jacksonville, FL, smashed into the rear of the bus. The injured school bus driver and the truck driver both worked to pull children free of the twisted wreckage as first responders raced to the scene.
The truck driver pulled multiple children to safety before collapsing. “He must’ve been running on adrenaline, and his body gave out,” a trooper from the Georgia State Patrol told reporters. He was taken to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Six children and the school bus driver were also taken to local hospitals, but there were no other life-threatening injuries and all were expected to make a full recovery.
