Anniversaries have both traditional and modern gifts that are given on the occasion. However, many couples choose to spend their anniversaries taking a vacation. This is what Maleka Jackson and her husband, Tiran decided to do for their 15th anniversary. They took a trip to the Bahamas. Tragically, that trip would be Maleka’s last and would leave her husband fighting for his life. The Atlanta Journal and Constitution reports.
Aja Mann texted her friend Maleka on Friday, June 29th, joking about the sorority chapter alumni t-shirts that Maleka had missed out on getting. Maleka texted back that she was celebrating her anniversary in the Bahamas and that she was going back to the beach.
On Saturday morning at about 10 a.m., the tour boat that Maleka and her husband, along with about 10 others exploded. They were off the coast of Exuma, which is about 130 miles south of Nassau.
Maleka was killed in the explosion and her husband Tiran was badly burned and the explosion amputated one of his legs. He is currently “fighting for his life.”
Jackson was the president of the Mill Creek Middle School for 2017-2018 school year where her son was a rising seventh grader. Just days before their trip, Maleka and Tiran dropped their son, Cameron, off with family in Tennessee.
The cause of the explosion remains undetermined, with the Exuma police leading the investigation into the incident.
Nine people were injured, with Maleka being the only confirmed fatality.
