An accident involving a tractor trailer shut down I-985 in Hall County, Georgia on Wednesday morning. The interstate was shut down in both directions as investigators righted the overturned truck and cleaned up the debris.
Shortly before 6 am, the truck crashed under the Plainvew road overpass and shortly after the crash, caught fire. Firefighters were able to quickly douse the flames after arriving.
Investigators trying to recreate the events leading to the accident state that it appears the truck first ran off the highway while traveling north. After running off the highway, the truck struck a median and then a guardrail. After hitting the guardrail, the truck swerved back across the highway, where it then overturned. Before coming to a final stop, the truck struck another guardrail and a bridge support.
Tragically, the driver of the truck was thrown from the truck and died from his injuries. What caused the driver to lose control has not been reported.
The driver has been identified as Brian Stephen Zegarzewski, and is from Fletcher, North Carolina.
The interstate was closed in both directions between exits 12 and 17 for a few hours as crews worked to clean up the wreckage.
