Tractor trailer drivers are typically among the safest and best drivers on the road. Even the best drivers can have bad days and end up involved in an accident. Unfortunately for one tractor trailer driver and a mourning community, a fatal accident involving a tractor trailer claimed three lives as the Atlanta Journal and Constitution reports.
Members of the Greater New Friendship Baptist Church were on their way to a revival at church in Macon this past Tuesday.
On their way, a fiery crash claimed the lives of two of the church members. Several others were injured in the crash.
84-year-old Robert Day of Vidalia, one of the church deacons, was killed after a tractor trailer slammed into the back of his car. Another victim, 81-year-old Marjorie Jones was riding in the church’s van when it was forced off of the road as a result of the crash. She went into cardiac arrest and died after suffering trauma in the accident.
A third person also lost their life in the crash. They were not associated with the church and were not identified.
The driver of the tractor trailer was arrested. 49-year-old Gerald Lawrence Thompson, Sr., is facing three counts of vehicular manslaughter. He is being held at the Bibb Country jail on $50,000 bond. At the time of the accident, he was driving a TRX Trucking Company vehicle.
The church reached out through Facebook expressing their condolences and asking for prayers.
