11 Alive reports that a deadly crash in Gwinnett County involved an SUV and a school bus. The incident happened just after 3 p.m. in the area of Pucketts Mill and Hamilton Mill Roads.
The bus was transporting five Ivy Creek Elementary School special education students. All of the students were checked out by first responders. They were OK and allowed to go home.
The injured people on the school bus were the driver and the school bus monitor. Their injuries were minor. The driver of the SUV that collided with the bus was killed in the accident.
The accident caused traffic congestion along the two roads involved. The location of the accident was just north of Interstate-85, causing police to urge people to avoid the location until the accident was cleared.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association, between 2007 and 2016, there were 320,874 fatal traffic accidents involving motor vehicles. Of those, 1,147, or 0.4%, involved school buses. There were 1,282 people killed in these accidents. 9% of the fatalities involved passengers on a school bus. Non-occupants, such as pedestrians and bicyclists, accounted for 20% of the fatalities. The overwhelming majority, 70%, involved occupants of the other vehicle.
Only 36 of these crashes were single-vehicle crashes, involving only the school bus. The majority of school-age occupants killed in accidents involving school buses were occupying other vehicles and not the bus.
