We read about bicycle accidents in the newspapers, but it’s rare to find an accident with just two bikes involved. Adding a fatality on top of that is even rarer. Yet Decaturish is reporting on a story where that happened.
Earlier this month, a man on a bicycle collided with a child on one in Avondale Estates. He was going downhill on Lakeshore Drive. Police believe that the man collided with the child, then was either thrown or redirected into a parked BMW.
Despite the efforts of a nearby physician who tried CPR, he died at the scene. Police also believe that the sun may have been shining in the man’s eyes and prevented him from seeing the child. The news story doesn’t say whether or not the child was injured in the incident as well.
It is a tragic situation. Sometimes the sun does cause crashes when it is at just the right angle to blind drivers. Cyclists don’t have the use of visors like car drivers do.
