Recent reports affirm that twenty-one current and former employees of a nursing home in the state of Georgia, including its owners, face up to 70 criminal charges for allegedly neglect and abuse elderly patients.
The abusive acts included employees restraining patients with bed sheets and subjecting them to “inhumane and undignified” conditions.
There’s was also physical abuse, such as striking patients and throwing water on them.
In a recently-conducted survey, about 50 percent of nursing home staff admitted that they had mistreated their older patients. Most of those instances included neglect of the patient.
Experts say that elderly patients are more vulnerable to abuse because they are often unable to defend themselves. In addition, forgetfulness is also a factor in some Alzheimer’s patients.
Recent report showed that patients suffer abuse or neglect in one in three nursing homes in the United States.
Unfortunately, many of these cases end with the lives of elderly patients, which causes much hardship and pain for the relatives left behind.
