Slip and fall accidents are perhaps the most common kinds of accidents that plague the retail, wholesale, and services industries. In fact, a whopping 60% of all slip and fall injuries take place in these industries. 65% of all injuries from a slip and fall accidents occur on a flat surface, known as same-height falls. While falls from a height often end in more serious injuries, slip and falls on a level surface account for the most common cause of traumatic brain injuries, with 45% of TBIs occurring during a slip and fall. It is estimated that some one million Americans suffer from a slip and fall injury every year.
That said, there are people who will fake such injuries to try and benefit from a settlement. The Atlanta Journal and Constitution reports on three people arrested in a “slip and fall ring.”
The state insurance commissioner’s office said in a press release that three men have been arrested for their participation in a slip and fall accident ring in south Georgia.
20-year-old Germain Baynard was arrested, along with 21-year-old Ryan Law and 22-year-old Demetrius Lee. All of the men are from Thomasville.
According to the charges, the three men staged slip and fall accidents in stores in Brooks, Colquitt, and Thomas counties.
Authorities are still searching for the alleged ringleader of the scam. She has been identified as 46-year-old Keronda Bell, who is also from Thomasville.
The state insurance commissioner’s office believes that Bell would stage the accidents and then file fraudulent insurance claims against the businesses.
All three men were booked into the Thomas County Jail but have since been released on bond.
