Takata wasn’t the only one that was subjected to lawsuits over their airbag issue. Automakers were also accused of wrongdoing. Settlements are mounting. A big one may have just happened with American automakers according to the New York Times.
Toyota, BMW, Subaru, and Mazda have agreed to pay $553 million in a class action lawsuit brought against them for the faulty airbag inflators. The court has yet to agree to take the offer, but signs seem favorable. The money in the suit will go toward paying affected members in the class as well as promote educational efforts about the bad inflators. Despite the danger, many inflators haven’t been replaced.
Honda, Ford, and Nissan are also embroiled in similar lawsuits and have yet to settle.
If you have a vehicle under the recall, we urge you to get the airbag inflator replaced as soon as possible. The igniters can explode incorrectly and send shrapnel throughout the vehicle. Several deaths and many injuries have been reported worldwide from the flaw.
