Tractor trailer accidents are far more common in the south than in other parts of the country. Although the drivers are often well-trained and many have years of experience, accidents do occur. The most common causes of accidents where the truck driver is at fault are driver fatigue, weight and loading issues, speeding or aggressive driving, and substance abuse. However, many accidents are caused by the carelessness of other drivers and not the tractor-trailer driver.
The Atlanta Journal and Constitution reports on a deadly tractor-trailer accident that occurred just before Christmas.
The accident occurred on the morning of Friday, December 21st in Clayton County. A traffic red-alert was issued at about 4:30 a.m. when authorities closed the interstate just east of Riverdale Road.
Police believe that a car had stopped or stalled in the right lane of the interstate. Another vehicle hit the stopped car just before 4:00 a.m. This impact pushed the vehicle into the adjoining lane, into the path of the tractor-trailer.
The tractor-trailer T-boned the vehicle on the driver’s side. She was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The passenger in her vehicle was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital with critical injuries.
No one in the other vehicle was injured. The driver of the tractor-trailer refused to be taken to the hospital.
Lanes were closed until 7:45 a.m. when authorities began slowly reopening them.
