In 2016, an analysis done by NerdWallet named Atlanta, Georgia as the seventh most dangerous city for drivers in the country. When it comes to individual intersections, some of the most dangerous in Georgia have been listed. They include Memorial Drive and North Hairston Road in Stone Mountain. Another dangerous intersection is East Park Place and Stone Mountain Highway. Covington Highway and Panola Road also ranked as one of the more dangerous intersections in the metro area. Cobb Place Boulevard and Ernest Barrett Parkway put Cobb County on the list. Bolton Road and Marietta Road in Atlanta also made the list.
WRDW reports that residents and police consider River Road in Burke County to be a dangerous stretch of roadway.
On Monday, October 14, two Plant Vogtle workers were killed in a head-on collision on River Road. Over the past few years, this is one of many crashes that have occurred on the road leading to the nuclear power plant in Burke County.
On a daily basis, thousands of plant workers come and go on that stretch of roadway. The wife of a former plant worker said that the stretch of roadway sees drivers going at speeds of 70 to 80 m.p.h.
The Burke County Sheriff’s Office says that speed is one of the significant contributing factors for the number of crashes on the roadway. The sheriff’s office has tried increasing police presence, issuing 394 citations and warnings on River Road. Last year, deputies issued 578.
So far over 2019, there have been 26 accidents with injuries on that road. Between 2016 and 2019, there have been eight fatal accidents.
The sheriff’s office gives copies of the citations given to employees to Vogtle. They also teach safety classes. These efforts may be helping. In 2017, a speed test showed that the average speed was 80 m.p.h. A more recent test showed that had slowed to 65 m.p.h.
