The Ride the Ducks attraction at Stone Mountain lets riders take a tour of the site using an amphibious vehicle. The design dates back all the way to WWII, but they’ve been redesigned over the years while keeping the look of the old vehicle. Ride the Ducks is headquartered in Atlanta but has licensed their tour style to other locations. One of these locations, Seattle, has just had a major accident involving these vehicles.
Ride the Ducks has been suspended in Seattle after a wheel broke off of one of the vehicles. The duck crashed into another charter bus on the Aurora Bridge. Five people were killed in the accident and 20 more were injured.
Worse, Ride the Ducks in Atlanta knew of the axle problem back in 2013 and recommended a fix to the other companies. The state transportation commission in Washington was unaware that this notice was issued, and that Ride the Ducks Seattle had any legal obligation to report it. The NTSB is also investigating the accident.
