A family headed home to Pike County, Alabama from Valdosta, Georgia was involved in a deadly automobile accident on February 22, 2016.
The accident occurred when the SUV the family was riding in was struck by a prison transport vehicle near the intersection of Highway 84 and Gatlin Creek Road.
Of the five people inside the SUV at the time of the crash, it is believed that only one person was wearing a seatbelt. A six-year old girl lost her life as a result of the accident. Also killed was the girl’s father, 40-year old Bobby Edwards.
Authorities were investigating the cause of the crash. However, it is believed that the inmate transport vehicle’s driver was attempting to cross all four lanes of the highway. The driver, Ernest Givens, had stopped at the stop sign on Cone Road and then again at the median. He did not see the SUV and T-boned the other vehicle.
After being struck by the transport van, the SUV then hit a tree stump in a yard and flipped multiple times. Three of the five passengers in the car were ejected.
Charges are pending against the driver of the transport vehicle, 58-year old Ernest Givens.
