Ordinarily, a diagnosis of paralysis can mean a lifetime in a wheelchair. However, some people decide not to live with that diagnosis. These people decide to fight to walk again. Some are successful and end up doing so much more than just being able to walk.
After being paralyzed from the neck down nine years ago, Ben Hildebrant promised himself that he would walk again.
Hildebrant did much more than walk. He completed the AJC’s Peachtree Road Race by running.
“I’m excited. It feels good to be out here and get to run. I mean, there was a time when I couldn’t,” he said.
Perhaps his determination was most evident in the progress he made at the Shepherd Center. The Shepherd Center is rated as one of the top 10 rehabilitation hospitals in the nation.
Hildebrant was only 16 when the accident occurred. His father said that seeing him run in the race was a miracle.
Hildebrant’s family was along the route the entire way of the race. They motivated him with smiles and cheers.
