Automobile accidents occur often when people are tired or distracted. They can cause great damage to vehicles and the passengers inside them. Even experienced drivers can become involved in automobile accidents involving distraction.
An off-duty Atlanta police officer was seriously injured after crashing head-on into a box truck.
The driver was identified as Gabriel McElroy and had been on the Atlanta Police force since 2007. It is reported that McElroy fell asleep behind the wheel of his vehicle and crashed head-on into the truck. The accident occurred early in the morning on Wednesday, April 6th.
McElroy was in surgery by just before 9 am the day of the accident. He was listed as being in critical condition. He is expected to survive.
The driver of the box truck complained of pain in his side but did not have any serious injuries.
The accident did severely damage both vehicles. The scene of the accident, Six Flags Drive at Elsner Road in Austell was shut down for a time while authorities investigated the crash. The shut down required that the WBS 24-hour Traffic Center issue a warning for motorists to avoid the area east of Factory Shoals Road.
