When your car becomes disabled on the freeway, authorities will warn you to stay inside your vehicle until help arrives. Standing outside your vehicle can put you at much greater risk of being hit by passing motorists. Unfortunately, many of us do not follow this advice and often get out of our vehicles to check the damage or make repairs. This can lead to tragic circumstances. CBS 46 reports on an Atlanta native NFL linebacker who was killed in an Indiana crash.
Indianapolis Colts linebacker Edwin Jackson was 26-years old and well loved by the entire Colts organization. He was killed by a suspected drunk driver as he and a friend stood outside their vehicle on an Indiana Highway.
54-year old Jeffrey Monroe of Avon, Indiana was also killed in the accident.
It is believed that Monroe was working as a ride-share provider who was transporting Jackson when the man became ill. He pulled over to the side of the highway and Jackson got out of the car. The driver then emerged from the vehicle to help the ill Jackson.
This is when a pickup truck driven by a 37-year-old man from Indianapolis struck and killed both men. The driver attempted to flee the scene on foot but was later captured.
The driver of the pickup truck was taken to the Marion County Jail. Results from a blood-alcohol test were pending.
Jackson attended Georgia Southern University and was signed by the Arizona Cardinals in 2015. He was released a short time later before being picked up by the Colts in December 2015. In January of 2016, he was signed to the Colts reserve team.
